I look around for the best deal but, I'd rather buy form a retail store just incase something is wrong I wont have to pay to ship it back to them. I have bought stuff online and haven't had a prob with anything yet. So find the best deal and do what you thing is better.

www.pricewatch.com - to find low prices
www.resellerratings.com - to see if the cheap site you find on pricewatch is actually valid

I trust:
www.newegg.com - a good site (especially for RMAs)
www.googlegear.com - another good site with some cheaper shipping options that newegg (such as ups)

i ordered a new videocard tonight and a 512mb ddr ram. I was limited on cash so i got:

Radeon 9000pro 128mb version
and
512mb DDR (1 512 card so i have another dimm socket when i upgrade to 1gb)

I got both from newegg.com nice site. And dont forget to check tigerdirect.com they are extremely trustworthy and have some decent prices on some stuff.

[edit] the reason i chose the r9000 is because I found a nice article done by techtv comparing it to a gf4 ti4200 both tested were 64mb models and the r9000 kept up with the gf4 until 4x anti aliasing was turned on then the r9000 lagged slightly behind.

I used googlegear for my latest rig. The prices for retail are the same as a lot of other outlets' prices for OEM. I used to use mwave.com and newegg.com, but I'm going to googlegear first until I find someone that beats their price and still gives good service.

newegg and googlegear are both in CA though. I wish there was something good on the east coast, things would get here much faster!

I reccomend www.ncix.com they are very reliable, they have friendly service, and also a price match feature where they will match the price from another website. I buy all my components from them, and if you are buying a new computer with most of the compnents from them they just keep reducing the prices on all of the components.
The link here is to the Canadian site for those of you who checked it. To get the prices in US Dollars, click the US flag in the upper left corner. Much better.
