There are ressources as we know. As a sole player, you spend them on upgrades and stuff. As a outfit, you spend them on what upgrades as well. but as the empire? EXACTLY! TOWERS OUT OF THE SKY!

Doubt it. More to do with the resource / economy system. Probably part of Outfit Skill Tree thing as well. I wouldn't want people dropping towers left, right and centre after reaching a certain level.

dont think you can just spam towers everywhere. Propably just certain locations.

To obtain minerals and such
Dropped from orbit or a transport ship

It might not be a tower, it might just be a sector fight

I believe it is landing gear due to what he mentioned in the video this could be good/bad depending on how they are deployed

Well I think it would be sooooo awesome if the towers could be dropped in from orbit even if it only are on certain locations and very limited would be awesome.

I personally got the vibe that it was a resource extraction tower that can be dropped from orbit to scoop up pockets of resources!

I would laugh my ass off if summoning towers from space/mothership was the new Orbital Strike.

After listening to the creative director talking about all territory in Planetside 2 will be contested against not just facilities, I think maybe after a faction takes a certain area in the game your galaxy/mother ship will fly over and drop a base.
This would then help to defend the area as he said said, areas that are contested against are vital for your empires needs and will give different resources, so how else are we going to defend an open field that we have taken over? With a base that gets dropped that's how. Just a thought.
