Just because they're a small part of a squad doesn't mean they can't be a critically important one though. The devs mentioned sticky cams as a grenade option at one point. Depending on how those work it would allow an infil to provide up to the moment intel on multiple areas of a battlefield, which amplifies the effectiveness of the rest of the squad. Cover from snipers and an invisible flanking group are both great ways to take out key assets like medics, and if they've made sabotage do interesting things (like open alternate routes) then they'll have that too. You may never have very many, but I think infiltrator can be made as team oriented a role as any. |

Going under that assumption, I'd say the value a cloaker gives to a squad of heavy infantry is he can sneak behind enemy lines and coordinate a particular sabotage event at the same time as their attack. Something akin to "hey guys, I'm in position to disrupt their spawns in 45 seconds; get ready for a big push." This is what we had in PS1, what with gen drops, and hacks on bases and whatnot, and it worked pretty well; IMHO. Certain cloakers could turn the tide of an entire battle just by showing up and pulling a few well planned, well organized maneuvers (I'd like to think I speak from experience on this one). After all, it's not just about blowing the generator, or dropping the spawns; as an infiltrator you also need to have heavy grunts close by to support you as soon as you've done the dirty work, or else your hijinks will be undone in a matter of seconds.

Depending on how the "scout rifles" work out and the ability to turn the sniper rifles into more of a dedicated marksman rifle infiltrators could be highly effective in the mid range. Add in some good team oriented equipment and you've got something you want a couple of in any squad.
In BF3, for instance, recon can be quite valuable in a mid-range firefight rocking the semi-auto snipers w/ 4x or dot scopes and indispensable for the team by providing SOFLAMs.

Im slightly worried about that strength/power consumption balance it mentioned aswell, dont think i like the idea of having to hop from cover to cover to recharge clock.
In reply to the "what can cloakers do" that im too lazy to go back and quote, think of a cloaker like a ferret in your trousers, its very hard to concentrate on anything else when you know its there! |

So what I'm thinking is that carrying a sniper rifle will result in X being greater than Y, but carrying just a knife will have X equal or lesser to Y. |

As for my contribution... Why all this angst against infils? They are a good role. I like the idea of being able to stealth around as a sniper now. Its going to be awesome and fair, ill be about to reach out and put a hurt on someone and if they are quick enough or smart enough they will have there chance to get an easy kill on me as I will naturally have little to no armor if spotted. I concur with Knocky, The Enclave sounds like a lot of fun to fight against. Basically due to what Mouser said. Last edited by Figment; 2012-03-20 at 07:55 PM. |
