Its not the core speed that matters as much as the chipset. Take an AMD for example:
P4 may/does have the fastest (MHz wise) CPU out. But an AMD thats trailing by 600MHz is right along side of it performance wise. One thing that people think and its a very common misconception, is that the more cycles it can process the faster it is, but what if the other chipset can can process several ______ at a time... omg, im too tired to remember the wording here ;p anyways, someone finish this for me.. hehe, except for one little thing, all gf2s had the same core..some just ran at a faster clockspeed (although the gf2ti pro had a smaller die core I believe) and anyways on the gf2 the limited in fps was the memory speed, which like $5 in memory sinks can let you hit like 520 on a good quality card :/
And yes the p4 does have the worst core ever, but luckily they have the extra gig or so of mhz to make up for it |

To suddenly jump back on subject (I know... sorry folks, you can continue right after this. ):
We don't need gibs. All it is is eye candy, and trust me... We have more than enough of that to go around.
