Skill systems are just an illusion. You wind up with far fewer interesting roles overall, little sense of identity (as in, players don't identify with their character as much), and you're left with much less interesting gameplay on account of how similar everyone is and how boring the gameplay mechanics necessarily are. Rather than having classes with defined playstyles and class mechanics, it's all generic crap. Classless systems suck. |

I would love a sandbox game like SWG with a better in-game guidance system. Show me how to do something but throw in additional mechanics as you progress. With many things to accomplish through out all classes.
And, I love crafting systems that have interdependency between crafting classes. Also, I know it's hard to do, but make it so the crafters are able to contribute to all the adventuring classes throughout the level tiers. EQ2 had this kind of crafting system when it first came out. They did remove (dumb down) the system, removing interdependency between crafting classes among other things. |

I genuinely do not get why people liked it as much as they claim to. |

I can't think of anything it did well. Armor reduced your "health" pools and could actually be more of a liability than anything. Player structures created a never-ending ocean of buildings on every planet, just like UO. Combat was clunky and boring. Leveling was grindy. Graphics and sounds were junk. PvP was just a bunch of guys with rancors dominating the shit out of everyone. What's there to like?
Oh, I guess some people liked just hanging out in cantinas, dancing or being danced-at. So I guess there's that for a certain percentage of weirdos out there. Last edited by Warborn; 2012-02-26 at 05:49 PM. |

I'm pinning my hopes on PS2 (unless it remains region locked) and GW2, plus another one I'll mention later.
GW2: I reckon this could be the next big MMO (and I haven't said that for an MMO since WoW). The team behind it is solid, the game already looks polished, the gameplay is different enough to feel fresh but similar enough to feel familiar...I think it has a good chance of being decent. EQNext: No. Planetside is the only thing that could get me to play with SOE again and that's already looking doubtful. The Secret World: I'm so disappointed from what I've seen of this. I had something so awesome in my head after seeing the first teaser they released, but then I saw the gameplay. The combat system is wrong and the aesthetics are wrong. Firefall: I haven't looked into this much, but recent events may well make me look into this further. I've heard very good things about the team behind it that could make for some groundbreaking mechanics. My MMOFPS slot was filled, but if it soon becomes vacant I'll be following this closely. World of Darkness Online: This is the one I referred to at the start. I can't describe how anxious I am to see what CCP does with this. For those who don't know, the World of Darkness is the setting for the "Vampire: The Masquerade" games (and I was a huge fan of Bloodlines). With CCP at the helm of this it has almost limitless potential, and I can only hope it's realized. |

I had to buy a time card, beacause Bioware doesn't accept my credit card. Anyway, have 2 months of gametime left, but already uninstalled the game. Its just a WoW clone with Voice overs. I got really repetitive really fast. If only I hadn't spent that money on the game, the beta felt good and fun... than the game released and nothing....

Guild Wars 2 is going to be sort of the same deal as GW1 though isn't it? A lobby area from where you can go to game zones or to PvP zones? Not really an MMO anymore than Diablo 3 will be an MMO, if that's the case. Diablo 3, incidentally, is pretty cool.
The best part of this game will probably be roaming the streets with a group of friends, beating to death anyone you see wearing a black trench coat. Although if they are smart they'll mix GTA with Bloodlines and create an in-game set of radio stations which include radio chit-chat not unlike Deb of Night, and I guess music that is appropriate for a city at night. In which case it could be a pretty atmospheric game indeed. |

I used to be a big fan of the game until I got invited to the beta last September. I played it, and while the quests and leveling were fun, the cutscenes really started pissing me off too and when I tested the endgame, I found that it was basically nonexistent. Since then, they have added only a little bit more content and all of the bugs that were reported never got fixed. I spent tons of time on the forums telling people that the game is just a crappy WoW clone, but that resulted in a flame war that actually got me banned from the forums for "trolling". I suppose that telling people the truth about their crappy game qualifies as trolling for EA, but now that people are getting to level 50 and becoming bored they have finally seen the truth.
This kind of crap is why I have a personal boycott against EA, they buy out good companies like Maxis and BioWare, import their creativity because EA apparantly has none, then bleed the company dry before disbanding them (Pandemic). SWTOR wasn't even made by BioWare, they just took the Warhammer Online team and put a BioWare sticker on it. Also, don't tell me that is just EA and the companies are fine, EA shifts managers between their subsidary companies and treats their workers like shit (See EA spouse and EA's official response to EA Louse). I think that gamers will eventually realize how bad EA really is and stop buying the shit that they put out every year, it's unbarable to see people defending a company that copies other companies and puts a monopoly on a genre when other people do it better than them (EA's agreement with the NFL after some companies made better football games then them in 2004). |

But yeah, no lobbies. It seems closest to how DAoC operates from what I've seen so far.
Also, I've heard WoD will focus a lot on politics and social-manipulation, plus who knows if it'll be possible to violate the Masquerade. You might be better off leaving the trench coats alone. Last edited by Vancha; 2012-02-28 at 10:38 PM. |
