This. (Except NC in my case)

I'll always very likely play NC the most, but if my outfit were to want to change it up and have some fun on a different empire for a night then that's what's going to happen.

What's this "loyalty" thing you speak of?

After taking a base along side my Vanu brethren I paint my naked body purple, my junk teal, and then run through the streets screaming "Technology equals might!!." After playing NC/TR for five minutes I have to wash my eyes with bleach, my mouth with gasoline, and scrub my hands with broken glass. Then I go sob in a corner because I still feel "dirty" for helping the enemy.

I have gotten in more than a few fist fights at work over my co-workers calling Barney "annoying."

My wife gets totally pissed because I stare at any chick in purple that walks by. She also wasn't really happy with me when I slipped teal coloring into her blond hair dye.

I Tk'ed Espryon multiple times for the good of the Sovereignty.

The only gum allowed in my house is grape Bubble Yum.

For the cold days

What I go running in.

How I get to work.

Where my dog pees

Drink of choice

My umm....plant

One of the amazing achievements that PS1 pulled off.

I think it's the gameplay experience that re-enforces the tribalism. The whole thing is so grand and epic - it's a persistent world that isn't sold to you through reams of dialog boxes and floating question marks.

You really feel like a cog in the war machine. And through the war stories we are all compelled to tell that spills over into the forums and internet.

Personally I don't think so.

I never took the backstory seriously and I'm not sure whether I read it.

The loyalty thing is about colleagues. You outfit, the outfits and people you squad with. The people on command chat you know you can rely upon and who will provide good advice.

It's also about the enemies. You get to know the names on the opposing side and when you're in deep sh*t or not.

When I read up on PS1 before I joined the NC were supposed to be the freedom fighter types, a collection of individuals who were more fair minded. The VS I thought would of been a bit faggy with the purple, younger sci-fi kids etc. Yet on Werner, the NC were very similar to what one imagined the TR to be, aggressive, chips on their shoulders, they expected, felt they deserved to have massive overwhelming force. I found that attitude amongst several outfits. Yet the VS who I ended up playing and always enjoyed, had more fun loving types, far more individuals as people, were quite robust. It really struck me how varied the types of player factions became and not always what one expected.

What surprised me 6 years ago was how strongly I was pulled towards the empire I ended up in and quickly considered it my loyalty faction. My profession is analytical chemistry, so given the science background, I thought sovereignty naturally. But one evening I was giving the reds a go on Werner and struck up amazing friendships very quickly. One hour became five and a half. I had my first outfit invite. A couple of nights turned into a couple of weeks and then years lol.
I really can't shoot terrans at this point. No game's made me feel like that before or since.

Spot fuckin' on, mate.

NC and VS, I've just got one thing to say.

HARDEN THE FUCK UP!

Jokes aside, it's a bit of flawed logic to assume that by not playing one faction or another that you've lost some part of the experience. Being so involved as to be fanatical about one is a immersive and wonderful experience in its own right that few other games can offer- but many can offer laser beams, heavy-hitters, or chainguns (or other factional differences). The player has the power to do whatever he wants- join one faction or three (on three different servers).

Exactly. After years of shared purpose with your team, you might feel a little guilty working against them.

In 40k Space Marine I made my armor red and black.

In last GW2 beta weekend I made my armor red, black, and grey.

In all my years of Planetside I have ALWAYS been in Dark Skyes since the moment I logged in.

-edit- I have played on the other empires, mostly for better knowledge on their equipment or to switch things up. I could never play normally against the TR on the same server.

I have played the other empires. NC on my first 7 day trial account, then VS on my first few months of sub, then TR for the remaining like 8 years.

Whenever I play another empire I feel as if I am cheating on _MY_ empire, the TR.

I will never play another empire seriously. If I do play as NC or VS, I have this urge to TK everyone and grief like crazy. Needless to say, I avoid playing on any empire besides TR.

I'm not loyal to crap, except I want to play on the side my video gaming buds are and weapons that fit my style.

That's either NC or VS.

As with the OP, I too am absolutely confused at WHY I am 100% loyal to the TR. I have not played PS1 seriously (as in a day to day function) for probably 5 years, yet, I still consider myself TR to the core.

I would never consider joining another faction for anything other than to learn their weapons and gameplay mechanics -- so as to be able to more efficiently kill them.

If I were to join the NC as a long term player I would not be able to live with myself. I would feel as If I was an American Soldier who joined the North Korean Army ...

I have never felt this "loyalty" in any other game I have played ... EVER. I doubt I will ever feel it again.

So I will say with pride ... "TR for LIFE!".

I would also like to add, that if my best friend started playing PS2 and he joined the VS or NC - I simply would not play PS2 with him. That's loyalty...
