first of all, the first sax was a bass. It was supposed to be an easier to play french horn because of its mid range, but with fingerings like the clarinet. It was made in the 1840s by adolphe sax and grew much more popular in the early 1920s. It is not in orchestras because it was so new and composers just didnt write many parts for it. It doesnt want to be a brass intrument. Its sound is more in between a clarinet and an oboe. Its range is greater then any band instrument. prove me wrong.

Adolphe Antoine Sax developed the saxophone in Belgium, I believe. He experimented with lots of different combinations of mouthpeices, shapes, horns, etc. He didn't get much popularity in Belgium, he moved somewhere else where several musical geniuses said it was good. He then got down a final design and since, it's been modified a whole bunch.
It was designed to get the effects of a bunch of different instruments, clarinets, trumpets, etc. Thus, it plays the whole slew of notes, that's what it was designed for. It's not extremely low, nor extremely high, but it plays the greatest variety of notes.
