I'm unsure about this. I thought people would hate it because there isn't a copious amount of Elmo meets JACKHAMMER action scenes.
To satisfy the bloodlusters, the next chapter will have one. It's too late tonight. I'm going to bed.

Chapter 10: Ishundar
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 24 hours later Ishundar Akkan Dropship Facility ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "NC One, standby for landing." "Roger that, Akkan." Ishundar was way the hell out there. Furthermore, it had a gate from the VS Sanctuary and another from the TR Sanctuary. NC population was mininmal, if anything. But there was a Desert Fox commander who was getting two diamonds to his Medal of Honor. Black Widow had to appear in the typical buisiness suit worn by the Secret Service. In the 100 degree heat of Ishundar, it was hell for her head. At least a freon cooling unit had been installed in the suit. Under that was a bullet-proof vest (protection does not apply to assault rifles, sniper rifles, or beam weapons, great job), and her MAG-Scatter. The president of the New Conglomerate happened to be in the seat next to her. "Sorry to hear about your husband, Agent Black Widow." She sighed. "Well, Mr. President, you just have to answer the call of duty. He seems to be doing well. It's his second day. I think he'll pull through. Remember what happened when he was executed 'for good'"? "Yes. Probably one of the most horrifying things I've seen." "Well, someone gets his DNA from a piece of his leg and defects. Hell of a deal. He just keeps bouncing back." "Shogun, was his name?" "Well, he changed his name to Strygun and went back to the Terrans." "What a story." The pilot alerted the crew. "Touchdown in fifteen seconds. Welcome to Akkan." They touched down. The agents took positions around the area. Snipers were already making sure nobody took a shot at the president. When it was deemed secure for the President, he exited the Galaxy. Everyone was in polished armor, hard to do in the desert. At least there were no sandstorms. He made a speech about something or other. Black Widow was thinking of Aztec while keeping the area secure. He got the two little diamonds and went up to this CR5 commander. He already had as many medals as Kaiser Wilhelm. BLAM! was heard in the distance. She didn't see anything, she just RAN. Screams went out. People started shooting randomly at the horizon. A lone Vanu sniper, Tobias, had buried himself, making absolutely sure that he was unseen. He almost never missed. He didn't reload his gun for fear of being seen, he just re-buried himself. She was about the third agent to get to the president. They all crammed into a Harasser. "GO! GO GO GO!" someone screamed. "MISTER PRESIDENT! ARE YOU OK?" "AAH! MY CHEST!" "MEDIC!" A medic who happened to be nearby was whisked into the Galaxy. Everyone got in and they made a rapid takeoff. Fighter escorts no longer followed in ceremonial formation.
Maybe he could have multiple personalities? Starrider, and his alter-egoes Fred and Jenny. Or narcolepsy..."Pull up Star!" *Snoring over the headset* *Boom* Thanks for the appearance, and bonus points to all who spotted my uber-elusive cameo appearance! *cough* |
Chapter 11: AGN Broadcast, NC Sanctuary edition
A British-voiced female Asian announcer was speaking. More than politically correct. "...if this plan is approved, we will be able to extend our engineering capabilities to..." AGN-Marsman came onto the screen. The Auraxis Global Network was the only all-Auraxis news agency not biased. They were officially neutral. They went out in brown-painted vans, a neutral color. "We interrupt this story to bring you breaking news. While heading an awards ceremony on Ishundar, a sniper has taken a shot at the President. We are not sure of his condition, but we will keep you updated."
Chapter 12: False Alarm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mercy Medical Center NC Sanctuary 24 hours later ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You're very lucky, sir. Tobias never misses." said Agent Thursby, an Agent and sniper. The President was not hit. The bullet literally went through his collar, millimeters from his neck. He was about to cough. This saved him. One of the agents had crushed him in the Harasser, breaking a rib. That was all. He had been in recovery for a while. The nurse returned. "All we have to do is give you a brace. Wear it under your suit. It will dispense nanites to heal the damaged tissue around the bone and it'll help with the soreness." "Thank you, Mrs. Esteban." he replied. They all walked out. The president could still walk. "Well, that was a hell of a scare." Black Widow remarked.

Chapter 13: One Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Day 7 of Aztec's therapy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The medal tour was almost over. Black Widow got a few hours off to be with Aztec. There was only one more hero to award. Dr. Freud greeted her at the entrance. She was in Standard Armor, which she wore off duty. Cigarette in mouth, she ran up to him. "Thank you for showing up. I heard about the President. Great job you people did out there. The picture of you sprinting for the President is on every news station." "So I'm famous. Great. In a few weeks there will be another hero. It's how life goes. There's always a bigger fish." "True, very true. Aztec is very resilient. He is progressing greatly. However, he's not doing well during the rest of the day. He is eating very little. He's also...well...you'll see." She was horrified when she saw him. He was outside in the small park area. He was outside, a good sign. However, he was thinner. He must have lost weight. He was paler, except for dark black marks under the eyes, almost like he had gotten punched. His hair was all uncombed. She ran up to him. "Aztec? What happened to you?" They gave each other a hug. Aztec seemed to hold on to her. "I...I'm not sure. What's wrong?" She produced a mirror. He saw himself. "Oh my God....that's me?!" "Yes. Thin, pale, dark marks...you do see that?" "Yes." He began to weep. He spoke crying. "I've been crying. A lot. I haven't eaten much, I don't feel hungry. I...Jesus..." He sat down under a tree. She followed him. "Well," she started, "the doctor says you're coming through nicely." "I know, I know." "So what's the problem?" "I just wanted to be normal. I wasn't one of those kids who listened to heavy metal, wore black, and stuff. What happened?" "The war. It had to be the war." "Yes. The war. It's the...." A blue and gold liimo came to a halt at the gate. TV vans followed it. "Honey, can you do me a favor?" he said, no longer weeping. "What?" "See the President's limo there? Is that real?" She gasped. There WAS one more hero to award. AztecWarrior.
Chapter 14: The bad old days
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 15 minutes later ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After verifying security and such, one of the aides stepped out of the limo. He ran up to the psychologist. After verifying him to be in good enough health to be in the ceremony, he ran up to Aztec. "Brigadier General AztecWarrior?" "That's me." "Excellent. Get into your Agile Armor. We'll be waiting." He entered the building, walked into his room, changed and combed, and came out again a few minutes later. Jeez. Why do I get this medal? There are others who fight just as hard, who die more often, and nothing for them. Black Widow was waiting outside, also in Agile Armor. "Ready?" "Yeah." "You've come a long way from an officer in the Terran Republic Air Corps." He smiled. "The bad old days."

Chapter 15: Stage Fright
She sighed. "You've been through a hell of a lot, even for a soldier..." Her voice seemed to fade away. The world was changing. Aztec could feel his heart beating out of its chest. He began to sweat. A flashback. But soon, he couldn't tell that it was one. He closed his eyes, wishing that it would go away. He opened his eyes. Everything was darkness. There were no walls, just black. No lights, but he could see dead bodies all around him, strewn about the floor. Some were bleeding, some burned, dismembered, and other gruesome killings. All around him. NCs, too. Wait- not just any body. They were all male. Black hair, tannish skin...looked Hispanic... Me! They're all me! Each and every one was him. He crouched down to examine the closest one. It's head was blown off. Yes, it was him all right. He began to feel very scared, and cold. He sat down, and when he did, he heard something coming towards him. "You. YOU!" He turned. A demon! It was flanked by a Terran and a Vanu MAX. It had to be ten feet tall. It had a trident. It was on fire, but that's how it was supposed to be. It had two huge horns. "Bruce. Michell. I'll handle this one." he said to the MAXes. They faded away. "So, here it is. Hero of the New Conglomerate, right?" "Yy...yes..." "Time to die. That's right. I'm taking you down. All the way to Hell..." "NO!" "Yes, yes..." Aztec got up and ran. He tripped over a body of himself. It was missing its legs. "but...I've been good, I hope. Isn't there a...." "What's wrong with you?" "pplease, don't take me down..." "Can you HEAR ME?" He formed his fingers into a cross to try to ward it off. But it kept speaking. "Not again. HELP! NURSE!" A nurse? Why the hell was it yelling for a nurse? The darkness faded away. The corpses disappeared. And he was on the floor, a few feet away from Black Widow and a few attendants. "What happened?" she asked. "Am I going to die?" "No! What...what did you see?" "Dark. Corpses around, but they were me. Dead. And this huge demon, ready to take me to..." "My God...do you want to go with the awards ceremony?" "Yeah. Yes, we'll do that."

Chapter 16: Hero of the New Conglomerate
Aztec looked at his chest. He already had qute a few medals. He walked along the long corridor. Patients and staff had been cleared. A few gawking patients were gazing through the windows. Photographers began to snap shots in the distance. Black Widow was already sitting down in the front row. Lawn chairs had been brought in. He reached the end. He marched along the path to the makeshift stage that was brought in. The sky had cleared up. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. There was a mature tree in the yard. Alien flora wafted in the wind. There weren't too many people there. Most were government officials, but he spotted a few CR5s here and there. AGN-TV was there, of course, along with several photographers. The day was beautiful. As he emerged from the hallway, everyone got up and applauded. He continued marching as if in a parade. When he reached it, the President, speaking from the podium, began. "AztecWarrior has seen a lot for a soldier. Remember when the Vanu built a nuke and detonated it? He was the sole survivor. Remember when..." His vision started to fade. The speech had triggered a flashback. He began to sweat, even though it was chilly outside. He squeezed his eyes shut, then opened them. Nothing. Everything was the same. A Galaxy was going to fly overhead. He gazed closer. It was a Vanu Galaxy! Something tumbled out the back. A bomb. The nuke. They were going to nuke again! He remembered the first one. Death, burns, ashes, just ashes and dust where an entire army used to be. Horrible mangled corpses. And now it was his turn to die. He avoided the first one because he was in the air. The nuke detonated. There was a blinding flash. He screamed as he covered his eyes. And then the flashback stopped. The entire crowd was staring at him, including the President. Embarrassed, again. Again! Aztec spoke loudly- he had no microphone. "I'm sorry. The President was speaking of my experiences. It triggered a flashback. You see, ladies and gentlemen, I have lost the ability to distinguish fantasy and reality. I am currently halfway done through my therapy..." "He had the option of putting himself on the priority list for medicine, but he refused, so he was given shock therapy. He has one week to go." added the President. "Thank you. As I was saying, I have schizophrenia. I have post-traumatic stress disorder. Both of these cause flashbacks and hallucinations. I am insane. While I cannot help the New Conglomerate now, I vow to do so as soon as possible, as I have since this war started. I vow to fight my hardest, and I vow to keep fighting until this war is OVER." There was a standing ovation. There he was, standing in Agile Armor, helmet and all, thinner, pale, and with dark splotches under his eyes from all the tears he shed at night. A far cry from the romanticized, ideal hero, the gunslinger with good looks who took down entire brigades with one gun. But he was still a hero. He couldn't help but smile when the President ordered him to stand at attention as he pinned two tiny diamonds to his existing Medal of Honor.

Chapter 17: Counter-nightmare
The ceremony took up most of the day. There was lunch. A few hours after noon, Searo stopped by to visit. That is an understatement. There were dozens outside who wanted to congratulate Aztec. The rent-a-cop at the front was less than pleased. "Sorry. We can't admit any visitors while the President's inside. Secret Service orders." "Damnit, man! I'm his friend!" A Man in Black approached him from an angle he didn't notice him at. "I do not think you understand. Unless you want to spend a week in the brig, please step away from the gate." Then a CR5 came in over Auraxis-wide text messaging. "Everyone, we're losing ground badly on Esamir. We need all the gawkers to stop drooling over Aztec and get over here!" A few minutes later, another CR5 whined because some of his troops were leaving Cyssor for Esamir. The usual CR5 drama. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aztec got to bed early. ECT, for him, took place early in the morning. At 10:30, he was in his bed with protective forcefield cage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He re-entered the nightmare. The demon was gone. So were the bodies. He thought he could make out a pinprick of light. It wasn't a void- he was in a tunnel! The other side was blocked off, however. He walked towards the end of the tunnel. He seemed to walk at a hundred miles an hour. He was almost there when he heard a soft female voice. An angel? Probably. "AztecWarrior. Your life has been filled with pain and suffering and hardship. You have been thrown down on the dirt more times than you care to count. But you got up. You bounce back, and you make the right decisions." "Who are you?" The voice continued. "Continue being good, and you will be saved." The voice faded away. He woke up. Saved...as in Heaven? Dear God, I hope so. He talked it over with the chaplain immediately. Aztec didn't want it to go public.

Conclusion
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Morning Last day of ECT- Day 14 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Ready, sir?" asked one of the doctors. They were crammed into the room. "Yes." "Your last day. After this you can be sent home. He was eating more. His skin regained its color, he put on some pounds, and the dark stains would go away with time, said Dr. Freud. He turned on the machine, and it was the longest 60 seconds of his life. But something was wrong...IT WAS HURTING! "MMMFPFFHHFPFH!!! URGGHH!!!!!" he screamed. His entire body quaked, but the mouthpiece prevented articulation. He remembered the time when the Terran outfit CDL captured him and tortured him with a shock machine. "AAAAAHHHHHH!" he mumbled through the mouthpiece. He couldn't take any more of this. He went faster and faster... And then it was over. A nurse removed the mouthpiece. "What the hell?! IT HURT THAT TIME!" "Well, recent advances have shortened this treatment. However, it does require the last treatment to be slightly painful. (Slightly?! he thought) We also gave you some nanites." "Jesus. Aaahhh...my head!" The pain in his head got worse, then subsided as the doctor ran a Med Applicator over it. "Well...that's it. Congratulations." "So...am I sane?" "The flashbacks should get less and less worse over the next few days. By next week, they should be all gone." He grinned. "At LAST!" He gathered his things and must have been out of there in record time. Black Widow was there in the civlian transport- Harasser minus armor and guns. She was in her Infiltration suit. "It's all over now." she said. "Amen." He got in. They shared a long kiss. "I have to go back to the front now. However, you still have the rest of the day off." she said, still in his arms. "Huh?" A Sunderer pulled up. Searo, Masurao, and others from Freedom Corps were in. "Aztec! Hop in! Party at your house!" yelled Searo. "Surprise!" said Black Widow. "Aww....thanks! Bye." they kissed again, and he moved his items from car to car. He pulled up to the door, and it was hard to hold back the tears. Everyone was cheering. Until he noticed that some fucker broke his toaster. You don't NEVER mess with a man's toaster.
