Frag, it's got to do with resonance. I solid gutar will feed back the resonance to the strings, so the more solid, the richer and more sustain you can create. If you've ever played a H0fner electric accoustic (note, NOT an accoustic with is wired for amplification) you will know you get a more tinny sound, even with twin humbuckers and selecting the fret pickup. This is because it's a hollow body.
Agreed the pickups will make a difference to.
BTW, if you listen to Mudvayne you will realise that some of their stuff if very technical, the song structures, chord progressions and syncopation (sp?) lends itself more to jazz than metal, but some people just don't get it.
