The real wear and tear damage to a computer occurs starting and stopping it. Everything in a computer is in two states, on or off, 0 or 1, electricity or none, open circuit or closed circuit.
The worst for hard drives is turning them on and turning them off. Leave a computer on will do LESS harm to the actual physical computer than turning it off. I turn the computer in my room off everynight. All the servers and media computers are 24/7. Whatever you do, continue to do it. If it is off, leave it off, if it is on leave it on

My housemates leave all their PCs on all the freakin time. I turn mine off when I'm not using it. But they leave their PCs on so everyone can read their lame away IM messages. In fact I had one housemate who went on a week and a half vacation and left up a message saying... I'm on vacation ... now here's the thing that gets me. You more than likely have already told everyone that is close to you that you are going on vacation you do not have to leave it on your away message!!!
And on to the tree hugger argument... besides vehicles the US uses oil for electricity. Less than 25% of our nations electricity comes from Nuclear or renewable resources (hydro, steam, solar). Therefore if you do not turn your computer off you are using a lot of electricity. That fan and powersupply (doesn't matter much if your HDD goes idle) is using at least 120-140 watts of power. Do you sleep with the lights on? Because that computer is using the same amount of electricity that 2- 60watt lightbulbs are (that's the standard house bulb) and almost as much as 2- 75 watt bulbs, even brighter. So please turn the damn thing off...!!! ~Tide |
