Good news for SOE is that there are few games that were supposed to be "big" but crashed and died in a spectacular ball of flame. Competition is getting fierce and some games are going to croak. Planetside holds a unique place in that its the only FPS of its scale. That will hold it...unless another company decides to jump in. And I agree, a serious lack of advertising hasn't helped much. One of the reasons for expansions alone is to generate "advertising" and keep the base from jumping ship. They need to start creating a buzz about thier next expansion right after the holiday season to get people inerested and speculating again. Perhaps even have a way for the Playstation 3 to have access (Planetside comes with the console or something).

yup.....50k people?

Ok according to very fast calculations it would be ~2500-4000 people per cave/island/battleisland.

Now imagine 2500 guys on Nexus =)

I think the population drop is also a result in many people unwilling to go through the balancing stages of BFR's.

A lot of people cancelled before the 3rd or 4th BFR patch, where they are reasonable to most(underpowered for some).

But mostly HL2, Halo 2, WoW, and EQ2. I'm going to WoW cuz I love Warcraft and that's where my friends are goin.

Well I haven't played planetside for about a week now, I really don't care about the BFR's but the thing that is forceing me away is the lack of people. The last time I was on, there was a pop-lock on searhus I think, the rest of the world was either completly captured or people got tired of, hacking a base with ten people, go to the next base with those same 10 people, after you hack into the next base enmey backhacks you, you go and try to re-resecure the hack, and the enemy backhacks the base you were just at...

Horrible

PLANETSIDE, WHERE HAVE GONE!!! I KNOW I'LL BLAME IT ON THE OUTFITS, ALL AT ONCE EVERYONE SEEMED TO STOP PLAYIN WITH THERE OUTFITS AND SQUADS GOT SMALLER OUTFITS GOT SMALLER, AND EVENTUALLY, YOU HAVE TEN PEOPLE FIGHTING FOR SEARHUS!

I think advertising would save Planetside. I wunder why there is no adverts for it? It's a great game and I'm sure with advertising the populations would increase by LOTS.
=-). I couldnt really imagine what an advert wud be like, but if they hired some great writers n stuff they cud make it look brilliant =D .. not that that wud be hard to do.
I actually found planetisde searching "mosquito" on google for a school thingy (had to rake through loads of pages). Maybe they dnt do advertising coz maybe it will get too popular and massive lag. oh well w/e

It's an older game (not a new release) and it would cost a lot of money to advertise for it. It's the new stuff magazines want to put on their covers or between their pages. This is partly why Aftershock was done. Combined the glamor of BFRs with the new two-in-one to give an expansion-esque package that magazines and sites would be more keen on advertising.

So, in other words, Planetside has gotten more advertisement lately than it has in quite a while.

But they never advertised it much at all, even when it came out. Sony just doesnt take it as seriously as EQ2 or WoW.

EQ2 and WoW are going to be huge. PS would be very, very lucky to ever come close to either. The marketing spent on PS reflects their opinion of the game's quality. As much as I like Planetside, I can see why people quit after a month around release time. PS really didn't deserve to have much more money spent marketing it when it came out.

Honestly, I think within a year they will combine all the servers due to a lack of players and then no more than a year after that PS will be shut down. At the current rare they lose players, it is unavoidable.
