First:
Assault Weapons != Automatic Weapons

Second:
The GOPA 86 says that Automatic Weapons manufactured after May 19, 1986 states are illegal for sale to private individuals. Anything manufactured prior to that date is legal to own, but subject to the NFA 34 which states you must pay a tax for certain firearms, among them automatic weapons. Some individual states ban private ownership NFA weapons however. (I'm looking at you People's Republic of Kalifornia)

In short, Martyr is right, automatic weapons are not illegal under the letter of the law, provided they were manufactured prior to May 19, you've paid a Federal tax prior to purchasing them, and you don't live in state that bans them. (Damn Commies)

thanks trig & cb, that's what i was goin for.
the unaddressed part of kam's post is regarding projectiles... "bebe" (BB)s are, by nature, round - it stands for Ball Bearing. same kind of thing you find in your rollerblades, cars, kitchenaid stand mixers, etc., used to reduce friction.

the gyroscopic and airflow properties of BBs in flight suck, i can do into detail if anyone wants.

everay: for a good one, you'll want at least $150.
(note: it has come to my attention that crosman now owns benjamin-sheridan, i'm removing them from my 'good' list)

i personally highly, highly reccomend getting an RWS fixed-barrel, but since this is your first, i would also suggest that you get something that isn't exactly top-notch, just in case you find that you don't use it often enough to warrant the cost.

so!

here's my suggestion.
there aren't any RWS or Gamo rifles for less than $150; webley is generally known for its modern pistols. that leaves us with beeman. the only common model less than $150 is the GH 500. it comes in .177, usually retails for just over $70, and usually comes packaged with some low-end optics - a 3-7x20 or 4-8x20 scope. nothing exciting, and the scope will probably fall apart from the recoil after some use. but hey, it's free.

the rifle itself is a barrel-break model. that means that to cock it, you grab the muzzle with one hand, the stock forearm with the other, and put the butt against your abdomen, then pull (hard) on the muzzle, swinging it down towards the trigger group until it clicks; then load a pellet into the breech and swing it back into firing position.

pull trigger, rinse, repeat. 525fps.

Did you notice the orange tips on the guns? That means you were in the airsoft section, not the gun section.

kam, i don't even know what your point is anymore, but it's not relevant to this thread.

the rifles bio mentions here are made by diasy and crosman, respectively. i make fun of these things with no reservations whatsoever. JROTC programs all over the country use those because they're touted as "match grade" by the manufacturers, but in the end, because they're cheap, in every sense of the word.

i spent some time coaching the NJROTC target team at my high school, but i eventually gave up because there was nothing i could do to compensate for their shoddy equipment

The front sight drives me insane, its a circle and thats it. You try to get the bullseye in the center of the circle and make sure its equal on all sides. I need a fixed point to focus on.

sounds like they have the wrong ring installed, actually.

those hooded sites come with a set of different sized-rings for different ranges.
i assume they're shooting at 25 feet and have the 10-foot rings installed
