Why not go with a small form factor system?
You can get all the parts of a top end PC in one of those things.

Thing is - this won't last forever. Moving on to college, I'm going to need an actual laptop for note taking/work in general as well as my desktop for heavy duty gaming at home.

You could all just get MacBook Pros.

Their nVidia 8600M vvideo cards are Direct3D 10 compatible.

Would be fun. I love mac's but they probably won't be able to fill my gaming needs.
