I don't know what caused a majority of the other losses, and quite honestly I don't care. Not gonna lie. The thought never crossed my mind. It wasn't me, it wasn't my family. I am unaffected. If I were, I might sing a different tune. The reality is, I'm not. So I can't tell you what could be out of what isn't. The fallacy in your thinking is A) presuming that I should care about perfect strangers and B) attempting to inflict YOUR moral code and beliefs onto me. Which I do not appreciate. There are greater tragedies out there - fifteen, ten, fourteen, eleven people dying in a weak-ass hurricane doesn't sway my soul. Sorry. I wish I were a better human being but... sorry.

Cool story, bro. Spent most of my time in the coastal regions of South Carolina. Family comes from Mt.Pleasant, Charleston and Sullivan's Island. Hurricane Hugo wiped out most of the beach houses on my dad's side of the family, costing my family a heft sum of money in property loss. My great uncle thought he was going to be hardcore and ride that motherfucker out, on Sullivan's Island in the direct path of the hurricane. He survived, but only by the grace of G-d if He exists. And ya know what? My grandfather said to him, "What the fuck were you thinking, Dave?" Hugo destroyed the entire town of McClellanville, which was right down the road from us. Been dealing with hurricanes for most of my life directly or indirectly (ie, family property losses). Good guess though. If this were Google I'd +1 for you. =/ I mean, I hate to be a dick but getting all board-warrior on me just makes me laugh when you don't know me, at all. Sorry that's not palatable to you or anyone else that thinks the same. I'm sorry you spent a lot of time bailing your friend's basement out. I really and truly honestly am. Property damage sucks and watching your life go down the crapper in front of your eyes isn't really my idea of a fun weekend. Regardless of what really happened in anyone's individual area, it doesn't change the simple fact that in the grand scheme of things, this hurricane was over-hyped by the media. I prepared every way I knew how, but I knew it wasn't going to be as bad as the news was screaming. I had extra water, batteries, flashlights, portable generator and fuel, canned goods, and my anti-looter shotgun. Oh, and a Hustler to replace my internet porn. I can understand people wanting to take precautions, as well they should - hurricanes are a force of nature the likes of which we will never control or comprehend. They are unpredictable and deadly. If that makes me hardcore for pointing that out, so be it. I don't think it does, I think a number of people are just snarky because I'm indifferent because I'm not affected. If I were affected, sure I'd probably sing a different tune. But my life doesn't revolve around what-ifs and alternate realities. Sorry, again I'd like to be a better human being.

Yea, it was def over hyped. Bored media. We had alot of rain up here, and there's a damn that had to use its spill way. You could see the news room just wanting to scream "OMG THE DAMN BURST". Actually wanting to see it happen. Lots of rain here, lots of flooding due to the rain.

Very lucky it wasnt a Cat 3+, that would have made NYC into the worlds biggest toilet bowl. Think Katrina was bad? A Cat 3+ would put Manhattan island under 5 feet of water.

I lived in Bay Ridge for a while. I almost wanna say a Cat.3 would be far more destructive. In addition to the damage from wind (I'm curious what type of damage those skyscrapers can handle)... low-lying areas near the water probably would be under about 10-15ft and higher areas probably would have had up to 5ft of water. Considering the number of basement apartments and basement rooms (and old people living in them) in Bay Ridge alone... I'd consider that a tragedy. And the subways? Wrecked. What about the electric tracks? All the power lines running in the tubes? How many electrocutions or power outages would be caused by flooded tubes?

Apparently our effects of the hurricane differ between the north and south.

But up here we got hit harder than before and we never expect more than some rain and wind from hurricanes, rarely does the hurricane itself hit.

I understand that. Like I intimated in my original post, just as Californians got all lulzy about the 5.9 shallow quake that rattled the east coast from SC to Vermont... so too do hurricane "veterans" (for lack of a better term) view this hurricane as something of a weak joke. I'd expect the same thing from my Yankee friends if we had a Nor'easter. Y'all would likely be like "suck it up and drive on". I'm not, additionally, saying that nobody should prepare. I sure as hell did, until I realised that this thing was being overly hyped by a media that should have known better. And I certainly do not advocate pulling a Rambo stunt like two of the Irene fatalities, one of whom was a farmer who went out to feed his animals and the other was a surfer who decided to catch some waves.

A majority of the deaths were caused by people having taken leave of their senses and being in dumb situations: namely, driving around in the storm, driving through standing water, trees crashing down onto their cars; being outside unprotected in the storm, like feeding their farm animals (not in Farmville), surfing in the storm, wading around in gale-force tides.

Hurricane Irene had led to the deaths of 14 people in six states as of Sunday morning:

CONNECTICUT:
— In Prospect, one person was killed in a fire that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said was apparently caused by wires knocked down by the storm.

FLORIDA:
— In Volusia County, 55-year-old Frederick Fernandez died Saturday off New Smyrna Beach after he was tossed off his board by massive waves caused by Irene. The Orlando Sentinel reports the high school teacher had a large cut on his head, apparently from hitting the sea floor.
— In Flagler County, 55-year-old tourist James Palmer of New Jersey died Saturday in rough surf. Family members say they lost sight of him after he waded into the surf in North Florida. He was pulled to shore and his wife attempted CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

MARYLAND:
— In Queen Anne's County, a woman was killed when a tree fell on a house and caused the chimney to collapse. Another person in the house was not hurt.

NEW JERSEY
— A woman who had called police early Sunday for help getting out of her flooded car in Salem County was found dead in the vehicle hours later.

NORTH CAROLINA:
— In Nash County, a man was killed after a tree limb fell on him outside his home Saturday morning as outer bands from the storm brought near hurricane-force gusts inland.
— Goldsboro police say a 15-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon after the SUV carrying her and family members collided with another SUV at an intersection where Irene had knocked out power to traffic lights.
— Authorities in Pitt County say a man was found dead in his home after Irene's winds toppled a tree onto his house.
— Another man in Pitt County drove through standing water, went off a road and died after striking a tree on Saturday.
— A mother in Sampson County died Saturday morning when a tree fell on a car carrying her and two family members.

VIRGINIA:
— Newport News authorities report that 11-year-old Zahir Robinson was killed when a large tree crashed through his apartment shortly after noon.
— In Brunswick County, a tree fell across a car Saturday afternoon, killing 67-year-old James Blackwell of Brodnax. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
— Chesterfield County police say a man died at a Hopewell hospital Saturday after a tree fell on a house that he was in.
— A King William County man killed when a tree fell on him as he was cutting another tree on Saturday night.
