Well, Ridley Scott has a pretty good track record, so even though I usually am not, I'll be optimistic this time.

Even when they started filming, it was going to be an Aliens Prequel. But Ridley Scott said it started becoming it's own entity. He's said the only connection between the two is Peter Weyland, co founder of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation involved in the Alien movies.

But in the trailer you see the same Ship and pilot seat that they where exploring in Alien. I'm hoping this movie explains more about the origin of the xenomorphs

Maybe he just wanted to distance his movie from the direction Alien movies have been going these last... 30 years, or however long it's been since Aliens. Either way it's pretty unmistakably a prequel to the Alien film.

Re: Prometheus................

So the plot I guess is than an ancient race of alien dicks put a map to their dumb planet all over Earth for humans to find. When humans are advanced enough to follow the map, they go to dumb planet. Dumb planet is host to a trap designed to unleash the xenomorph creatures against the race that finds it. Humans trigger trap, get infected andtransformed into into xenomorphs, and at that point the ship autopilots its way back to human space to infect more humans and destroy human civilization. Entire point behind the xenomorphs, therefore, is to suppress advanced, starfaring species before they can really get going because the aliens that made the map are dicks.

BAM

Just to point out, that was 100% speculation on my part based on watching the trailers in this thread. No spoilers there or anything.

That's probably right. Although, I'm really hoping it's more than that, because that doesn't actually make a whole lot of sense to me.

I mean, instead of leaving them breadcrumbs so you can kill them if they get too smart, just friggin kill them straight away. Why go through such a convoluted scheme?

I know, I know. Because Hollywood.

at first glance it would seem that way, but after being really bored and reading into some of the lore, another possibility is that the ancient race left the map to meet humans when they were advanced enough, but while waiting either created/encountered the Xenomorphs and they were eventually wiped out by them. and the reason that one of their ships had already set course to Earth is because they were goingto retreat to Earth but their ship was overrun before they could take off.

There's almost certainly more to it. Ridely Scott's movies aren't typically so superficial as what I've proposed. It's certainly a good question, why not just kill them straight away. Certainly they were expecting people to go there and get killed by xenomorphs though as there's the big carved human face and stuff.

At any rate, very much looking forward to the movie.

You're most likely correct.

In the original Alien, Ridley Scott wanted it to be like this:

Alien nabs you. Alien cocoons you, you turn into Xenomorph, as Alien DNA takes over your body and transforms you. ((See the deleted scenes when Ripley is on the Nostromo and comes across Brett and Dallas in the hive.))

It would appear that he is trying to do that in this movie.

Humans find Space Jockey ship, humans unleash Xenomorph virus, humans begin to transform into Xenomorphs....or even Space Jockeys themselves.

James Cameron threw a monkey in the wrench though, when he fleshed out the Xenomorph life cycle in Aliens.

But, Ridley Scott is a respectful man, and I think he is honoring the Alien life cycle that Cameron came up with....

So this might be something completely different. We'll see.

When I had first heard that Ridley was going to direct an Alien prequel, and then six months later my phone rang and the voice on the other end said, “Are you available to talk to Ridley Scott?,” and then I crashed into a telephone pole, I answered the call and Ridley was like, “Hey, man, I’m going to send you a script tonight.” And, he doesn’t know he’s Ridley Scott. So, I read this thing and we had a meeting, and he was already very clearly saying, “I want to come back to this genre. I want to do sci-fi again. I feel like this movie is just a little bit too close to Alien. I’ve done this stuff before. But, there are big ideas in it that are unique, in and of themselves. Is there a way to do that?” I said, “I think that that’s what we have to do.” If there were a sequel to this movie, it would not be Alien. Normally, that’s the definition of a prequel. It precedes the other movies. The Star Wars prequels are going to end with Darth Vader going, “Noooo!,” unfortunately. There’s an inevitability, in watching a prequel, where you’re like, “Okay, if the ending of this movie is just going to be the room that John Hurt walks into, that’s full of eggs, there’s nothing interesting in that because we know where it’s going to end. With really good stories, you don’t know where it’s going to end. So, this movie, hopefully, will contextualize the original Alien, so that when you watch it again, maybe you know a little bit more. But, you don’t fuck around with that movie. It has to stand on its own. It’s a classic. If we’re fortunate enough to do a sequel to Prometheus, it will tangentialize even further away from the original Alien. When you go to the concert that is this movie, you want the Stones to play “Satisfaction.” There is this sense of us saying, “We want you to do something new, Ridley, but just give us a little bit of space jockey. Just play it! Even in the encore.” And, I think Ridley has given us the movie that I think we all want to see.
Interesting, interesting...
