I don't want to steal any of the hype, but environment mapping is only a few lines of code in a shader. I guess it's cool that it's being applied to an eye, but it's mostly a gimmick.

It would take a whole new paradigm of graphic capability to add true mirror-like reflections to goggles, panels, anything.
Right now the shiny stuff, the reflective stuff just projects an image of a certain light level or set scene, from what I've seen. It doesn't reflect actual stuff around it, because that is best done with ray-traced graphics, and I don't think the industry is going to ray-tracing instead of bitmap graphics any time soon. Ray-tracing can do reflections accurately and well, but I think it would be too much load for the average video card. They have entire server farms that are dedicated to this that take days to chug out portions of an animated movie. Things in games may be shiny, but they are not usually truly reflective, as this is unnecessary to gameplay, and uses gobs of GPU power to properly execute.
