Or what if they want beta to start BEFORE GDC so that way at GDC they can show the game in action with a few hundred people on their servers?

Remember GDC is an event for developers to show off new ideas to each other. It's not really for fans.

Agreed. Schedule a GDC event on the beta servers to show it off.

yeah, finally some progress on the most speculative question ever!
it´s no date, but it´s a serious step forward.

but i remember matt saying something like there was no physical server yet, not so long ago. i wonder how long setting up an external server capable of handling a thousand players takes? i guess there´s more to it than calling a hoster, order some power and start the serversoftware on it

With my luck first wave of beta (or whole beta) will be US only. EU dont even know yet if they will play under SOE.

Ii don't see that happening, Beta is server testing as much as it is gameplay/bug fixing.

If its like any other beta I have done then the beta server may be only up for testing at certain times in the beginning. Especially if not all game elements are in yet. We will also most likely be testing specific elements of the game. We may have access to all upgrades one day and only specific upgrades on other days.

As an Australian - i can say that i was in the first beta wave back in the day hopefully region will not matter this time around again. I will be extremely disappointed if it is.

Ohgod I hope they don't give out beta at GDC...I wont have a computer that can run it on me when I'm there. I might try to steal higby's computer and play :P

I can swear I remember reading somewhere that beta testers won't be limited to US residents only, so I think all you fuzzy little foreigners are good.
