You say that as if the gunplay in PS1 and BF3 are similiar. I heard someone talk about swaying, and that might be the same in both games, but gunplay also includes ballistics and time to kill...from the videos I've seen, it seems like PS2 gunplay is more like BF/CoD in that respect and less like PS1...is that about right or? |

At the time Planetside 1 released many of the shooter franchises that were well known were things like Unreal Tournament and Quake; hell even Halo reflected these games in most ways. In 2003 the emphasis was on crazy visuals, over the top weapons, and large health pools to take advantage of them. Because of this Planetside 1 had much of the same, but on a larger scale. Now fast forward to 2010-2011 as Planetside 2 goes into major development and what kind of gameplay does the average shooter fan look for? The "realism" (I use that term VERY loosely here) of the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises. Fast, quick TTKs and "realistic" weapons and visuals. No matter how much we liked the first Planetside, the second one is going to have to adapt to the modern era to some extent in order to survive. And honestly you can see that in the game. YES, it does look closer to Battlefield than PS1 in the gunplay. It has to, because honestly PS1's gunplay is considered slow and unappealing to modern shooter fans. As for the OP, if the way the game has evolved (or devolved if that is how you see it) does not fit your tastes; then maybe you need to find another game. And I really hate to say that. But as far as I am concerned it wasn't the gunplay that made Planetside 1 amazing. It wasn't the long TTK, it wasn't the 15 minutes it took to hack a base, it wasn't the classless system or even the animations that played as you entered/exited a vehicle. It was always the SCALE of Planetside that made it unique. It was the planes overhead, the tank columns rolling over the hills, the sounds of bullets wizzing by as you charged into that courtyard, the sky as it filled with flak as Galaxies dropped soldiers into your midst. That is what made Planetside what it was; and as long as that holds true for Planetside 2 then CoD and BF have a LOT of catching up to do.

Lol.
You're joking, right? Reducing Planetside 2 to some details taken from modern FPS mechanics shows you're either embittered, stupid, or that you just don't (want to) understand what Planetside 2 is all about: large scale battles and team play. And saying the dev team is lazy? That's just trolling. Not gonna feed you. Last edited by Sabrak; 2012-03-12 at 05:51 AM. |

What counts is that they reworked base fights and put a lot of thought in how to make them more intense.
I'm more concerned about how much work they put into vehicle fights outside of bases which is another important aspect of the Planetside concept. |

I think the title should be changed to "To be honest, I'm disappointed PS2 is copying CoDs gunplay" for the reason that Battlefield 3 devolved into CoD and Battlfield is well and truly dead.

I hated, or at least disapproved of, many aspects of PS1. The scale was the only thing that kept bringing me back. They can change whatever they want, so long as the scale and combined arms is there it will be awesome. |

Planetside 2 only needs one thing to be awesome...... LARGE SCALE BATTLES IN A PERSISTENT WORLD!
So long as it has that I am sold, I could care less if the gun play were anything like Quake, Halo, or Battlefield. |

Has anybody actually polled the BF and CoD crowd to find out exactly what they think and if they actually prefer some of the BF/CoD style mechanics over some of the native PS1 mechanics that are being dropped?
I don't have a problem with a lot of the changes, but this argument that "the CoD/BF crowd want a clone of their game to be happy" doesn't swing with me. Has anybody considered that the games are so popular because they're just the best shooters on the market (which doesn't necessarily mean that some of the mechanics couldn't be even better)? Has anybody considered that the BF/CoD crowd just assume that certain features like freeform inventories and massive battles aren't possible technologically/in terms of balance, even though they'd think it was awesome? Maybe we should actually poll some BF/CoD communities and find out before we start assuming they all want a clone. Last edited by texico; 2012-03-12 at 08:09 AM. |

Nothing should be copied from bf3. It's a disaster and nothing more than a lame attempt at coping cod that failed misserably.
Don't defile a good name like Planetside with n00bified gunplay from either of those two abominations. I was a Battlefield player till bc2 rolled into town and started the destruction of the battlefield series now it's all but dead and nothing more than a run n gun n00bfest.
