I've met a bunch of people over the years that when I recently started talking about PS2 to them all these, "One time when I was playing Planetside..." stories started coming out of the woodwork. It was totally unexpected for me to run into so many people that had heard or even played PS1.
They didn't talk about how such and such tank was better, or this gun was cooler. No, it was all about how Jim-bob almost took to the generate room by himself versus 10 other dudes by tricking them into splitting up to find him until they had him backed into a corner between two groups fireing on him when his buddies finally arrived by Galaxy Drop into the courtyard behind one of the groups. Edit as an effort to preserve the topic. (How do I colapse the text like in Spoiler tags?)

The problem with those indie games is that they are completely wrong genre for me. That said, I've played many of them and for what they are, they are pretty damn cool.
That said, I do also think a lot of people need to take off your nostalgy glasses. Go play those games now, you might realize that hey, compared to a modern game this isnt as fun as I remembered. Times have changed radically since those times, as have the players. I can admit that when I was 15 years younger and when the technology was what it was, a lot of games were super fun and super good and I might perhaps not get the same feeling with games nowadays. But I realize it probably isn't only the games, it's me getting old as well. That said, I do agree that sadly the industry is going towards questionable trends. F2P is both a gift and a curse, overall many game dev companies feel much more money centric than before. But that also goes with the change of time and culture. Sadly, the "DLC on launch day" is today. 15 years ago there pretty much were no DLCs, depending the game there mightve been an expansion few years later if even that. Also, sadly many of the "cool" companies have been eaten by the big corporate names, the truely unique and refreshing titles are often the indie games, who have no corporate lead breathing down their neck.

I don't hate other games, I have just played so many I have grown tired of the same old shit day in day out. I cant even play a racing game anymore or an FPS (small map). Portal 2 almost made me puke. Yea it was the amazing story line that kept me involved from start to end and the CoOp, but after 1 round of the game I felt it was money "almost" wasted. That is another thing. Like Skyrim, I can wait to play this. but I will play it in a few months when they have some good mods out for it. And I will experience the game in a completely different way to the folks that play it now. (The SuperMorto XXX version XD ) If I see another 18 rated game that has no 18 rated content I'm going to call the police as that has become a joke. I just don't feel challenged by game any more. And I suppose the only challenge really left is other people playing the games I like or a fucking very very very good storyline. You know what I think I'm just getting old. But saying that there are many new kinds involved in Planetside 1/2, including some of my good friends in this community. And they are bringing the same desires for a game to the table. They look for teamwork and a constant open world of never ending pew pew pew fun!! So maybe age has nothing to do with it. I'm not sure what it is. But I'm so glad PS1/2 are here as I don't think I would be playing games atm if they where not. Geez canny wall of text there ^^^ lol. |

A lot of those older games wouldn't be fun now because 1), we already played the crap out of them. 2) we're also older and more experienced (read as jaded). 3) the games had heavy limitations from the level of technology of the day that just are not present today. In fact for #3 the technology has gone so far beyond those previous limitations that some of the really good games of yore are too old to run on modern systems.
I was turned to Dungeon Keeper 2 only a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. I had to run an emulated version of windows on my Windows based computer to do it as well as tons of other fixes but I loved it none the less. Why then did the company that bought the IP rights for Dungeon Keeper gut it so much and so terribly? Whatever their reasoning I can guarantee it's because they didn't give a shit about the IP or the consumer. Something that for certain is not the case with Higby, T-Ray and a whole lot of the other devs working on PS2. I love how much they love their own game and the attention they pay it to make it into the best they can get away with making it. Last edited by Kran De Loy; 2012-03-19 at 10:29 AM. |

I'm going to echo the sentiments of a lot in here, Mass Effect 3? SWTOR? Naa, i've been sitting around reading these forums and learning Objective-C/JSON (I'm a pro C++ developer) so i can make a kick ass iPhone app when i get my hands on the stat feeds.

One other thing, PS has allways had a great community spirit... Lets try to make sure that this doesnt get lost when this game explodes like it surely will, just take a look at the SWTOR forums now. Absolutely full of trolls trying to tear the game apart with poorly worded dribble about why they dont like the game, lets not let that happen to PS2.

Good thread, and I'm the same way. I've told everyone that will listen about PS2, gamer or not. This is the only game I've ever followed before beta opened.
I hope that when its finally begun our unrealistic hopes of it being "just what we remembered, but pretty and populated" can be tempered to enjoy what PS2 will be. |

waiting sucks!
i don´t play any other games any more as well. i log into star trek online every few days, but i don´t even do much in there. i promote planetside 2 in the chats most of the time yesterday i logged in and there was a ps2 discussion already going on without me! the discussion about games getting old because every new game is just a carbon copy of some other mainstream game is going on every day in sto! especially when it comes to mmo games. and since most players out there never played ps1, ps2 will be something totally new for them! but it´s really time for beta, i already blew my fuses and my brain is melting. cannot stand this level of hype much longer.

The problem in the past few years is console gaming.
Before you revolt and rise as one and slay me, hear me out. Game developers have appealed to the lowest common denominator, and I can't blame them. The ultimate goal as you know of any gaming company is to make money. The bottom line is everything. They don't do this shit for free ya know. That being said, Planetside always was geared towards the PC gamer in the first place. Massive battles, epic teamwork...something console gaming can't even touch. So really, Planetside is for the serious gamer. Someone that is willing to put time and effort into his/her gameplay. I for one welcome our SOE overlords, and can't wait until console gamers evolve up to our level and play with us. |
