it has generated big piles of money for many years and none of this went back into the game.

ok, we all know soe won´t give away money for nothing, so let them put up the billboards with advertisings up again to cover the costs.
but the old technology would still need GMs to scare off the cheaters from time to time.

I really don't see anyone playing PS1 after PS2's release, it's free to play, better, funner, awesomer.

The only way to get into PS1 is to pay $, even if it's part of a station pass.

But even if those station pass holders where interested in PS, why log into that when PS2 IS FREE, and BETTER, FUNNER, AWESOMER.

If there is any staff keeping PS1 alive they need to be fired

Given the current information, a rather accurate prediction:

Once we get a beta date, you propably see a rather large pop spike in PS1 subs. Once beta starts, pop slowly beings to drop, as people stop playing PS1 and go straight for PS2.
Later down the road, once beta is rather full, PS1 will be a ghost town mostly. Once PS2 goes open beta, PS1 will be literally dead for a few weeks.
After that, a few people will decide that they dont like PS2 and head back for PS1. I would guess about 50-100 peeps total.


Unless Sony jumps in and does something for PS1. But given the inabillity of them to deal with cheaters (PS1 has literally no anti cheat tech, means it relys fully on GMs, and they have to follow some rules), Sony cant make it F2P (trials went away exactly for that reason!). Whatever happens, once PS2 is open beta, PS1 will be rather dead.

Have you played PS2? How do you know it will be better, funner and awesomer?

It depends if PS2 gives you everything PS1 did, except with more modern graphics. Only then would you expect nobody to play PS1, but even then some people will want the nostalgia.

Dito. I was hoping some battle that involved the PS2 Devs. Like Higby with a speed hack, infinite ammo, rexo with 3k health, a thumper, and he gives 1 million xp when you kill him.

So no I haven't played PS2 and I am jumping the gun, but even if we don't think PS2 is awesomer, SOE will want us to. They would prefer people play PS2 because there is a chance they'll get more then $15 a month from them via the store. If not they serve as fodder for those that do pay money.

It'd be pretty badass if they reserved one server for "Planetside Classic" just as an experiment to see how many people would play it. But I doubt they'll want to spend the man power on it, especially with the inevitable hacking problem. Can't really fault them for that, so I'll settle for a fond farewell just before the release of PS2. Maybe all the devs could jump on PS1 for an evening and we could all try to get a couple pop locked conts again one last time.

Don't forget that Asheron's Call survived it's sequel by over 7 years and counting and is still collecting subscriptions and providing new content.

PS1 wasnt in the game listed in pro7 deal, so they probably dont expect it to survive PS2 launch.
