Re: Will PS2 have "Mechs?"

Instead of saying no and ranting on biffers...how about we say "Yes" and point to the MAXes?

Technically speaking they are more like vehicles then armor since they HAVE armor and not the P-shield.

This accords with my thoughts.

Personally I didn't and don't like using them in ps1 but I do not get particularly upset that they exist and wouldn't mind if they were added into ps2.

Ho boy AwkdShellfish, you stumbled onto the Topic That Shall Not Be Named. Basically Battle Frame Robotics came out as an expansion in PS1, were a balance disaster, and everyone around the forums has had a knee jerk spaz out reaction to the mention of the M-word ever since. Mentioning the BFRs around the PS 1 vets in this forum is like mentioning that "Uncle Touchy" who's antics with a 3 year old at a family reunion put him in jail as a sex offender: they do not exist, nor did they ever.

To answer the OP question honestly if there will be mechs in PS2, "sort of". Mechanized Armored Exoskeletons (MAX suits) are man sized powered armor suits. In Planetside 1, they were the heaviest weapon platform that counted as "infantry", with each one specializing in AI, AA, or AV. In part 2, they will be able to mix and match guns on each arm with those load outs, along with other gizmos we do not know about yet.

Full sized "mech warrior" units are not confirmed for launch, although Higby left the idea open as a possible expansion down the line. Given the community response, this is probably a good thing they are not at launch. Ideally if they ever did get added into the game, they should either be a side grade to main battle tanks (slower, closer range siege units maybe?), or have a unique purpose other than "super duper ultimate units". Smartly implemented and balanced, not "we're trying to sell an expansion, here's a Mech Warrior!".

Noooo! I don't mind MAX suit soldiers but mechs, no way Jose. I hate even the mention of it. I don't care about balance issues - mechs are plain stupid. As a next great idea let's make them transform into planes or tanks. I don't wanna play friggin' transformers.. if any of you do here you go: http://www.bigmoneyarcade.com/transf...ers-games.html

He especially did not use the search feature of the forum and did not make any effort reading all the countless threads that were already created in the recent past.

Are we really going to make another 15 page duplicate thread about this topic ?

damn, stop feeding the trolls.

even with a bad search function it should be possible to find one of the thousands of "mechs in ps2?" threads. and it´s no use to discuss all this shit again all over.
there is just nothing you can say about this topic, that hasn´t been said already in one of the other threads.

Sure why not? After all with the MBTs now being single seaters why not have overpowered walking death machines to ruin the game before launch. Solo > teamwork

Everyone automatically assumes that mech=overpowered.

And also, there is extreme prejudice against anything that requires teamwork to kill. If it can't be killed by one person in a tank or reaver, people don't want it. This is why they fight against naval combat, space combat, airships, etc.

As soon as non-PS1 vets start coming in in serious numbers, the call for naval combat and other things is going to increase even more.

For the most part you're pretty good about not saying silly things. This is not one of those times.

Naval combat, space combat, and airships have been suggested since Planetside was in beta. Some people like the idea, some people don't, but you can't lump 'us' into being against these things. It's not true.

As for 'against anything that requires teamwork to kill' that's a load of tripe. It takes teamwork for infantry to destroy vehicles, MAX's, take bases, pretty much anything other than 1 vs 1 encounters.

If you're trying to imply that the community was against BFR's because they took 'teamwork' to kill, you're simply uninformed. In the early days it took 2 BFRs to kill one, because 1 vs 1 they literally couldn't kill each other. You could have 2 tanks pounding away with perfect accuracy, cycling in and out to mitigate damage, and not even drop the BFR shields. And then there were the guys in the flight variants killing infantry with near impunity, racking up hundreds of kills with few deaths (if any).

On the topic of mechs, I think they could find a place in Planetside 2. Something akin to the walkers in BF2142 would work just fine. Lighter than a tank, heavier than a MAX.

Re: Will PS2 have "Mechs?"

Depending on how you define it, there was naval combat in PS1.

Just like mechs and BFRs, it's all about what definition/idea/meaning is associated to a word or expression.

Because most of the people around here played PS1, most of us assume that mech means BFR-like and those were unbalanced. So yes, you are right in saying that people assume that "mech"=OP. But that's only because we had BFRs and I do not think the OP took time to explain what he meant by "Mech".

Then again, this HAS been discussed (and a few people actually tried to explain what "mech" could mean):

New single person mechs designed from scratch for PS2
http://www.planetside-universe.com/s...ad.php?t=36707

However, I just realized that the thread was closed so if people want to go through the same discussion again, the new thread is justified.

Similar to what CrazyDuckling said:
There is nothing wrong with mechs/spaceships/aliens/lasers/C4/zombies/stealth bomber/atomic weapons/ninjas/pirates/vampires/insertyourcoolidea. How it is implemented is the key.

And I do not think prejudice is the right word because it can go the other way: it is not because something requires teamwork to kill that it will automatically become fun.

Concerning the PS1 vets, it's really about this: "Once burned, twice shy".

Re: Will PS2 have "Mechs?"

My 2 sentences are not 100% on the same subject. BFRs were overpowered in shields as you point out, so everyone automatically assumes that any resurgence of them will be as well.

And I can tell by your response that you think 2 tanks is teamwork enough. Yes, that's teamwork, but why shouldn't something take 3 tanks to kill? But note that while I'm working off your 2 tanks vs BFR argument, I'm not talking about BFRs now- in the case of outfit airships, why should 2 Mosquitos be able to gun one down? Why shouldn't it take a lot more? Or, since Mosquitos are less well armed, why shouldn't it take 4-5 heavy attack aircraft?

^^^ Good history lessen Another thing about the BFRs that started the whole animosity towards them was that to get certified to drive one you had to spend a lot of time in the caves. This took away from the main game play above ground that everyone already loved. Because a big chunck of the players wanted to get certified, out of curiosity, those that didn't care about it were left high and dry for fights. Also, the caves were a bit of a learning curve. Ziplines everywhere and not so easy to tell which ones to use.

I suggest searching for threads to before asking them in a new thread. Smed himself stated well over a year ago there is no BFR/Mech making into this game.
