How "cool" do you want your gun to sound? You want it to spew DMX while you shoot lead downrange? It's a rifle/gun .. it goes "bang", and the bang is effected by the caliber, barrel length, round weight/velocity, etc. But a minor change to a specific weapon is not typically enough to notice with the human ear (especially if you're wearing ear protection -- which you should always do ) -- ie. An M16 with a flash suppressor still sounds like an M16 without one. The only exception to this would be a suppressor/silencer -- as a sidegrade, but it would have to have a significant trade off for me to even support that. |

I voted no...
Reason 1: Guns have 1 sound. Without changing something on the gun (suppressor, ammunition, etc) you shouldn't be able to change the sound. Reason 2: I want to be able to identify a gun by it's sound, so I know that the person that I'm about to run in to around the corner is HA and I should probably not go toe to toe with him. |

the gun sounds need to stay the same for everybody, to be recognizable.
BUT there are loads of other possibilitys for really cool shop stuff. melody horn for the sunderer, anyone? i see 2 possibilitys there. a buyable horn-melody editor, or specific melodys to buy seperately. the kids today throw money at their cellphones all day to get stupid ringtones, so this could work out very well. but there needs to be an option for all other players, to mute or switch melodies back to standard, to avoid being annoyed by very stupid music they hate. i would leave the game if i had to listen to backshit boys tunes all the time. and 99% of the charts today is stupid annoying shit. besides the sunderer horn, there could be a sound-system for the galaxy and the liberators. you know, wagner ;-) which movie was it in? apocalypse now or full metal jacket? but this would be even cooler as an outfit thing. so if a whole outfit rolls in with several galaxys, they play the music synced. ... hmm never mind, i just realized, that the game has its own music, and a feature like this would collide with the ingame music. but the sunderer horn would still work out fine because it´s just a short melodyand may have a cooldown to prevent spamming

Tactically, weapon identification is vastly important. I know the sound of a friendly knife keeps people from freaking out and breaking position versus the sound of an enemy one simply because they know (or believe) it won't harm them.

Nah, I always liked being able to tell which faction was invading your base just from the sounds of faction-specific gunfire. Even if you can't see them, you know you've got massed chain guns running around the halls with you, and therefore you've got some TR to squish.

that would kick ass!
i am sure this would be worth a try! do the freeman first, check if it pays off, and if so... there are no limits to make money! just pay some blockbuster actors to do some voicemakros and sell them on the store! could even work for localized versions and make even more money because i think the syncro actors are easier to get and cheaper than the original actors. and there are a lot of badass sounding actors out there, people would pay for. it even worked for navigation systems, so why not for a mmo game?

Everything looks better in Red and Black
Also, no to custom weapon sounds. The distinct sound every weapon makes was always a great way to tell what empire you were fighting and what weapons they were using. Now that there is no third person to check corners, sound will probably be one of the only ways to predict what gun your foe is using before he shoves it in your nose. |

I say no because of the reasons others have stated but another tactical thing people should notice is footsteps I listen to footsteps when in small buildings and I crouchwalk to hide the sound of my footsteps while listening to the enemies footsteps and it totally works.

Any specific gun variety should always sound the same, unless you do something to it that makes it perform differently. Ex. Silencers, barrel length, weird ammo effects.

Thanks for the comments. What I had in my mind was a selection that was tight enough sounding to enemies, but unique to the player's ear drums. It would have an unmistakable empire feature.
An example would be the pulsar from ps1. This had standard energy bolts and armor-piercing bolts. Granted the energy based weapons are easier to tell apart from kinetic weapons, but saying that, the ps1 gauss could have been a vanu sound effect with some imagination. It's hard to put across what exactly I had in mind because I'm not a sound engineer and I can't whip up audio examples. I just love my sound. If I could afford the gear I would be an audiophile :-) I think people also sell themselves short regarding what their brains could recognise. One sound per weapon? Pah your grey matter would be insulted :-)

As much as I would like customizable, I agree that we should be able to recognize the sounds of the guns of each empire. But perhaps we can get the best of both worlds. Each gun will have a specific sound, but each upgrade will change the sound a tiny bit(Of course, it will sound different if the fire rate is higher or lower, but perhaps it sounds a little different if it's more accurate/less damage or more damage/less accurate.
Different sounds for each upgrade, yet still the same base sound that's just been modified with each upgrade so you can diffentiate between each Empire.
