That said, the drivers themselves frequently offer performance improvements. Typically, though, it's fine to run with the latest WHQL (Windows hardware quality... something -- basically, drivers that were submitted to Microsoft for stability testing and earned a stamp of approval; with graphics drivers and other drivers that see frequent updates, it's rarely economical to submit every build to be tested) drivers *unless* you're experiencing problems or lower performance than you'd expect. Then go looking at beta drivers newer than your WHQL ones for notes specifically referencing your problem or the game in question. If that doesn't solve the bugs you're experiencing, check the support forums for your game; they may recommend an *older* set of drivers, usually because some driver update broke something in their own game and they're still working on fixing the compatibility.
