I could see underwater bases and passages as a possibility, like the caves in PS1, and depending on if (and how) swimming is implemented, maybe with flooded/fully submerged sections. Maybe even some small water crafts and submersibles.
However, ships really don't fit in the game, as this is about a conflict between three factions on another planet: if the VS or NC make warships of decent size, they'll just get OS'ed to oblivion (the TR maintain most of the control on the fleet, including most of the military stuff spaceside), and if you have the resources to do so, why not make spaceships instead? I mean, today, the viability of a wet navy (and even there, only carriers and their battle groups) is debatable as anything but an advanced base or, in the case of submarines, for surveillance and, more importantly, as a tool to increase the operational effectiveness of nuclear weapons. And as to why? Well a ship/submarine would be better at exploiting an underwater resource than a spaceship so it could be made that they are instead of ships the larger ships are more of mobile mining platforms. And smaller ships would always be a welcome anti air platforms and a slightly sturdier alternative to airplanes when you want to capture a larger ship. As to the original idea, would be really cool makes for a lot more awareness between your favourite place to fight and the rest of the world. So if the enemy is about to get control of a tunnel that will give them fast and easy access below your large tech facility? You need to be aware of this and get your outfit and friends to push them back so you can get back to whatever you like best. Oh and I didn't play the first Planetside. I can see it now! "Planetside 2: combat devolved... into swimming around in caves and treasure hunting!"
But seriously, no. It's unrealistic in a scify genre like this. This is a space combat game, not an aquatic combat game. They'd have to, in essence, make a new game. All new vehicles, all new mechanics, all new guns, etc. Then they'd have to make that all fit into the current world. |

And if there is a continent added with a bunch of underwater bases, and new vehicles to get to them, then people would use them. I consider that, as long as new capture mechanics and gameplay extensions aren't enormous pains-in-the-ass in and of themselves, they could add variety to the game and make it more interesting, in the long run. Why do so many people think the only battles that would be fun in an MMOFPS are the ones from PS1. I think there are way more possibilities that are unexplored in the genre. Most new suggestions immediately get this 'Oh noes! Nothing new! BFR all-over-again!! herpaderp' and that's it. In terms of the game universe, limiting play to such particular environs doesn't make sense. The very reason and objective of the war itself, and presumably the means by which it is perpetuated, is through the exploitation of the resources of Auraxis. It could further be assumed that these resources don't exist only on land. Hence: underwater bases, offshore rigs, possibly naval combat, at least on the limited scale of a futuristic Navy SEAL team or something. A soldier can die a thousand deaths, but he can't get his face wet? Say what? |

However I do think we need to do something about water oceans and under water other than just some type of obstical that Vanu Vehicles could be the only ones to move across. |

On another note, I don't know anything about how caverns went, having never played them. I watched some streams during the 30 days, and it looked bizarre. I don't really know what they were thinking. It looks confusing, and doesn't seem to have a place in the game. The weren't like any real caves to start with, and then they wove some crazy web of crap around. Looks like an untested, intriguing, but ill-realized conceptual fail in level design. Now with luck, the designers live-and-learn, but I don't think the right lesson is 'never do large indoor areas'. Just that it needs being done differently. For that matter, the 'caverns' might well play brilliantly in PS2. We'll very likely never know. |
