while i don't think super big ship vs ship battles and stuff would be a good idea, since it would spread development a little too thin to make it really good, it would be pretty awesome to have something like Shattered Horizon, make the near earth (or whatever the continent is called) orbit a new continent with unique vehicles and equipment.

It wouldn't require as much development since it simply plays upon already established precedents in the game. Just a few new spacecrafts, or at least enhancements for prexisting aircrafts for space combat, and new base designs with multiple entry points such as docking bays and satilites, and asteroid stations. The HUGE cruisers might be a stretch but everything else can surely work. The team wouldn't even have to spend time handcrafting entire contentents for this expansion since there won't be any massive terrain between bases- just the void of space. Just stick a skymap of Auraxis in the background since this 'contitnet' would be located just above the planet.

I would love to see something like Starwars Battlefront 2 where there are massive capital ships slugging it out, fighters dogfighting in between them, and then marines being landed onto ships.
They could even have massive space stations with strategical capture points. Each side buys fleets for a space battle event that happens a few times a week. This could make resources on the ground even more important. Then the capital ships charge at each other and try to capture these massive space stations. You use the capital ships to fight for the ability to land more soldiers onto the space station. There is so much possibility. I would love to see space battles really utilizing the scale of Planetside 2. |

I mentioned before years ago. The idea of segregating ground troops from vehicles could be a game design of PlanetSide2's space battles.
Vehicles can strategicly change 'indoor' battle by surgical strikes and station dismembering, etc.

*TACTICS* Personally i can't wait to be a fat admiral. *TACTICS*
I went to the supremacy or rebellion school of space warfare. Overwhelm them with numbers. Big bad ships go first. *SMARTS* On another note though. I echo some of what's already been said. I think space battles are cool and all but is it all worth it? I'll write a list of what is "FUN" for me when I think space battles. 1.Blowing up stuff. 2.Blowing up big stuff. 3.Blowing up really big stuff. However after a while "blowing up stuff" tends to lose it's impact a bit. Sure if you're flying around with your buddies watching your back that adds fun replay value. The thing i wonder is...what's the point of fighting these grand space battles and really it's just one battle surely? There has to be a purpose, the response of "it's fun get over yourself" doesn't really work. To have it added into the game it would have to have impact on the ground. Which then would be a balancing act, the people who only play groundware will obviously dislike random changes occurring without them having any control over them. Of course I suppose you could make it work both ways, add more incentive to helping both. If you could make it seem like your both fighting for the same things...that could help. For example take over something on the ground and it could help the fleet some way. The fleet takes out a ship and now a particular empire radars can be jammed in a certain area (already in the game for weather effects). I mean if you really wanted to get crazy you could have it when a capital ship was destroyed, you could have the explosions seen from on the ground....even have the debris falling (might be stretching it a bit) the debris could cause all sorts of crazy weather. You could have predetermined locations of where debris could fall or at least could fall. To avoid...things like a door way being block thus trapping people inside a building... The debris could be an objective, of course then you might as well open up the debris to being more common. I guess all these ideas are kinda of spur of the moment...off the top of my head i can see problems with them but potential for aspects that would be unique as far as i know. Of course having people running around ships decks and then potential for corridor shooting on your own or opposing fleets ships sounds fun...but the purpose of doing it. Would need a lot of thought put into it for the amount of work it would need to now just be... Anywho that's just what think i'm sure others could disagree. Considering the already massive scale of planetside. Last edited by Rare Raisin; 2012-08-06 at 04:34 PM. |

As for the "why space battles" part? For the same reason as the currently existing ground battles. My addition to the idea was that the battles would take place over a similar contintent template, with lots of bases spread out to be captured with, all within the hex system; the only difference being that there isn't any terrain to walk and ride on between bases -just the void of space to travel through via aircrafts. Perhaps have the space 'continent' be fought over drop towers or orbital strike areas, instead of resources, so that there would still be a purpose for going up there and riding with your squadrons, or dropping with your fellow shock troopers onto the various bases on the space 'continent.' I can't help but stress how easily space battles can be implimented, as they wouldn't be such a major deviation from the current game design template. lastely, it would be a good cost-effective alternative to Naval warfare, that requires all new development for water, waves, a whole new fleet of crafts for various uses, and more handcrafting of new continents (as oppsed to creating a very beautiful space skybox (+ effects) to fly around in, along with some new bases, and maybe some modifications for current aircrafts). |

I want awesome space battles but I also want to be able to drop pod right to planetside and start fighting on the ground as well. I want seamless ground to space to ground combat, and I want it to encompass all of the servers so I can potentially fight anyone that is playing planetside2. I aint asking for much, just the stars.
