Yep. It's not an FPS type thing, so you aren't aiming the guns and stuff, but combat is still very involved, to the degree that while much of combat is dependent on your character's skills, how you maneuver your ship, switch ammunitions, activate specific modules and manage your power reserves is the largest factor in who wins a fight.

Technically, yes. Each race does have its own "set" of weapons that their ships get bonuses towards.
Amarrian ships tend to get Rate of Fire and energy use bonuses on energy turrets. Caldari ships are better at using missles and ECM equipment, they also have a secondary weapon of Hybrid Railguns. Gallente specialize in the use of combat drones, their ships have the largest drone bays for thier sizes, and their dreadnought is capable of controlling up to 35 drones. They also use Hybrid blasters, very close range but very high damage weapons. The Minmatar, being the least advanced of the group, use the brute force of projectiles. Fast-firing, short range auto-cannons or slow firing, long range, high damage dealing artillary. The Jove, the only unplayable race (right now - they're possibly adding the Jovian bloodlines to Kali, the next big story patch), are the masters of stealth, using their cloaked fleets to attack their enemies in unbeleiveable shows. They specialize in beam use, but their beams are much more advances then anything the Amarr have. But a player isn't limited, at all really, on what weapons and ships they can use. You just have to train all the appropriate skills for the weapon and ship. For example: I am minmatar, but my Amarrian ship skills are much better then my minmatar, I'm also a lot better with energy turrets then with projectiles.

You can board abandoned vessels if you have the skills to fly it.
They arent all gunships, the Caldari have a full line of missile boats. And Minmatar ships use missiles as secondary weapons. And the speed differences of the ships are worth mentioning as well. Minmatar have the fastest ships in general, Caldari the slowest, Amarr and Gallente tie up inbetween. There are exceptions to the rule of course. |

And no not technicaly, the classes in game are frigates and larger. But the interceptor sure feels like a fighter they run 3.8-5km/s circles around everything else.
