Re: PC Gamer April Issue with Beta Key

Oooh I'm excited to get a crack at this game, unfortunately Planetside's release was too before my time to really get into (was 10 or 11 when it came out, had no idea about it) but I can remember going on on a friend's account.

Can't recall a thing about how it felt, but I've had a passion for somewhat "serious" games like ARMA and Opflash (which my original xbox almost exclusively played ) that are about teamwork and large-scale coordination, so I'm amped for this release.

As a side note, the correlation between interest in "serious" games and enrollment in the armed forces is something I find interesting, I've met a ton of awesome people in the Army, etc. through ARMA

Regular Army is like that too, sort of. At least at certain ranks (I think starting at SSG). Each MOS has a specific number of slots for certain ranks. If those slots are all full, you have to wait. I couldn't get promoted to Master Sergeant because there weren't any slots and nobody was retiring any time soon so I tried to reclass, that was a no-go, too.

Ohh okay, yeah the guard starts pulling that shit at E-5.

But like I said before I would like to think I earned my rank, being one of the few to max the pt test let alone pass, plus being a team leader for a year and an acting squad leader for 6 months, and being one of the few people to go to a military school(even if it was just Javelin School lol)

Sounds like you guys are a lot different from Marines. In infantry it's hard as shit to pick up even Cpl. I know multiple steller Marines that have been in over 5 years with at least 3 pumps to Iraq and Afghan. And I've been to plenty of weapons and infantry schools.

Must be your branch - I have a guy on my paintball team who's in HMX-1 who just re-enlisted and is getting his stripes. Maybe it's the high-viz unit but he's barely got four years, if even.

This is very true, we are different in many ways, one of which being we outnumber you 5 to 1 lol.

A by the book Army infantry platoon should have 1 e7 4 e6's and 8 e5's give or take an e-7 for weapons squad.

Whilst a by the book Marine Platoon only has 1 e-6 and 3 e-5's give or take an e-7 for a weapons platoon.

that right there should show you why it's a lot easier to reach the an NCO rank in the Army as opposed to the Marines. Marines naturally pride themselves on having much more difficult promotion process, that doesn't really take away from the army's however, having 5x as many people requires 5x as many NCO's lol.

ADDITION: Another thing I forgot is the Army has all but gotten rid of the rank of Corporal, there extremely rare and usually considered the worst rank in the Army. In a sense the Marines Corporal is the Army's Sergeant in terms work and experience, we just get paid more .

Re: PC Gamer April Issue with Beta Key

i have seen a few people say (in this thread even) that PS2 will be anywhere from 1k vs 1k vs 1k to 3k vs 3k vs 3k

has there been any word at all on the size of the battles? somehow i cant see even 1k vs 1k vs 1k working too well (server wise)

my guess is 300-500 per side (similar to ps1) which is still plenty imo

No official word on numbers buddy, but the Higs did mention it was massive battles along the lines of PS1 . I think i recall him mentioning that it would be bigger size battles then ps1 but i might be wrong...

Personally even the scale of numbers from PS1 was insane (insane being a good thing )

On the other hand, in terms of ability to play test the game, and understand it's particulars, long time PS players certainly have insights which non-PS players likely do not. I'm not saying that every PS1-vet's feedback should outweigh any non-vet's feedback; rather I'm noting that there are many players from PS1 who have a great deal better understanding of how the only game like PS2 (i.e., PS1) works, than someone off the street. Also, long time vets have proven a devotion to the game which is important when considering a playtester's feedback. Many playtesters play the beta and never even buy the released game; these folks shouldn't be determining the style of the game for die-hard PS players who have proven a devotion to the PS franchise.

Yes, PS2 is going to be different from PS1; however, since the latter is largely based off the former, it's reasonable to assume there are going to be many overlapping areas. Therefore it is certainly reasonable to say that veteran PS1 players will have greater insight into how PS2 should be developed. I'd draw an equivalency to two CR5's arguing over how a fight should go in PS1; one who is a multi-year veteran CR5, and the other who just got his backpack. The older CR5 likely has a much greater understanding of how the fight will progress, and can foresee how certain events will unfold much better than the new CR5. I think that same idea can carry over to the new game, in that older vets can look at a situation and have a better idea how that situation will work out in the long run, as opposed to someone who has only played standard FPSes (or standard MMORPGs). Obviously, you get good players and bad in both cases; but I think on the whole, long time PS1 vets are more likely to provide insightful feedback.

All of that said; we don't really know what they're going to do until they tell us more, so we'll just have to wait and see...
I logged in with my crappy internet and took 5 minutes to post this just to quote how right you are. Very well said, Mouser. Could not have been said better I think.

I think it works both ways. Yes, PS1 vets will push it more towards a Planetsideish direction, but I think you also need the fresh players to counterbalance the PS1 vets who may push it into too niche an area.
