What exactly are you expecting? The four basic archetypes for RPGs are: melee DPS, ranged DPS, tank, healer. Do you know of other archetypes?

Modern MMO players tend to simpify things far, far too much. It's fairly common for people to simply ignore controllers in particular, and then wonder why their l33t group wipes. I remember a time when your Ranged DPS was split into pure DPS classes, and magic-based controllers with damaging abilities. The former always had the numbers, but without the latter a bad pull would mean a wipe or worse. Along the same vien, far too many players who play Hybrid classes often forget that their class can heal or tank at ALL.

You know I never really thought about it but you are correct. Everything is just a basterdised version of one of these classes.

And they all suck. Classes should be about playstyle not group roles. See: Guild Wars 2.

Action is the new buzz word in the world of the MMO. Lets hope it sticks - we have had everquest for over 10 years now, time for some improvement guys.

And I can dump ranged DPS into the DPS archtype, reducing your four to three. It doesn't change the fact that those archtypes DO (or did) exist. Controller in particular does not necessarily fit into any of your stated archtypes. Certainly, a ranged DPS or a healer can also be a controller, but that doesn't change the fact that the archtype exists.

Quite frankly, modern MMO kiddies are spoiled nowadays with easy classes and no-thought content. I've played games where if you didn't have a players there specifically for CC in an instance(and he better be damn good at it too), you would wipe. End of story. Hell, I've BEEN that Controller in the past.

Example #1: The Buffer/CC
The Final Fantasy XI Bard
DPS? You will get laughed at.
Healer? You don't have the mana to keep up with damage delt, and the healing songs SUCK compared to the other buffs you can have up.
Tank? Ahahaha.... *gasp* hahahahaha....

Highly sought after in a party to the point where if you wanted to do anything yourself you needed to hide your job? Yup.

Example #2: The Enfeebler

DPS? Nope.
Healer? No.
Tank? *Squish* No.

So what archtype does the Druid fall under? All three/four? With Dual-Speccing a druid can swap between two of your archtypes within thirty seconds (Or less. It's a bit inventory expensive however.) and even a feral druid can drop form and heal/rez in an absolute emergency. Jack of All Trades exist in almost every RPG, doubly so in MMOs.
