well i sure as hell remember the first 15 minutes
logged in , messed with the options a bit. walked out of the spawn building and see about 8 gals sitting there loading up people and vehicles + air support. oh god it looked so awesome. yelled " hey guys can i come along?" got invited, made war. i also shat myself about 20 times in the first hour purely because of the awesomeness of it all.

I remember it very clearly.
I didn't like first person shooters. I thought they were diversions for bloodthirsty retarded children. But the idea of an online *war* complete with support roles excited me, so I followed the news through beta and pre-ordered as the live date approached. The first thing I did was read the user's guide. I'm a technical writer by trade so I understood the importance of Reading The Fucking Manual. Then I dropped into sanc and chose instant action. I materialized somewhere outside a huge wall surrounded by trees, near this boxy blimpy minivan with some kind of Romulan cloaking field around it, and saw something on the ground. Naturally I ran over and looked at it. BANG says the mine. *BLEAAARGH* goes my avatar. HOLY FUCK says I, and laughed. Maybe that was karma at work, because I wound up certing CE almost at once, and have considered myself an engie first and foremost ever since.... I ran around a bit and got shot by people I never even saw, then the AMS blew up and I found myself in a nearby tower. I ran up all the way to to the top get the best possible view, and saw a SOLID COLUMN of people dressed like heavily armored Cub Scouts running like motherfuckers towards the tower. My involuntary reaction was AHHH IT'S THE COPS! WE'RE BEING RAIDED! And then had to privately laugh at myself again. We held the tower, I recall, but I didn't do much except peer around and try to stay out of everybody else's way. I spent the first hour of Planetside as an armed spectator, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Last edited by Rivenshield; 2012-06-30 at 11:04 PM. |

First day.. i tried out a few weaons in VR, then made a loadout that had the punisher, assuming the fact it had an underslung grenade launcher would make it badass.. well i was a noob. Then joined a random squad on sanc, who got on a gal, flew off to cyssor ( i think) and then did a few tower drops to train people what to do, before going off to fight proper. I was only on abou 2 hours cos then I had to go down the pub.

My housemate was playing in the beta. He beckoned me to his room one evening to show me this cool new game he was playing. I watched in awe at the immense base zerg he was part of, then he got up and let me have a go.
From then on it was a blur, but I eventually realised that the sun was coming up and Mike was long since asleep. I thought it best to leave it there, and sneaked off to my room to catch some sleep. But not before preordering and signing up to the beta myself. |

I don't remember what server it was (want to say Markov) but I made a TR and wound up at a fight somehow. It was basically a half-an-hour slide show because my computer at the time was in no shape to even remotely handle the game. Unfortunately I had to put the game away for a year or so until I was able to get a new rig and try again.

I installed the game at the insistence of a friend who had played for a few weeks after launch. I had no idea what to do but I grabbed a NC Falcon Max, got into a Gal at Sanc and hot dropped on a base on Solsar. I landed on the base wall just as an enemy gal flew low over the base. I spammed my Falcon on the Gal and blew it to little pieces, getting my first 8 kills. Good times.

I had just got out of the Army and taking a short break before finding a new job. I've only heard of Planetside with a couple advertisements in magazines but found it on the games shelf at a store that doesn't exist anymore. I didn't start playing till month and a half after release.
I give it a try, first making an NC character in a Sparrow MAX. I kept wondering why I was running out of ammo all the time till I figured out that those little boxes are for additional boxes of ammo. That was on Konreid. I created the character I use today on Emerald shortly after and continued to play that one ever since. |

In my first hour I was in a tower next to base, using /b to demand passing aircraft to "identify themselves" and firing on them if they did not respond. They were probably all friendly.
On the first day I would use HART (15 min timer) to capture all tower on empty Ishundar, using drop-hack-recall in pyama's and with surpressor. It took me several weeks to figure out I could press r to reload. I would spawn a new Lightning every time the clip was empty. |

Reading all the stories like these always makes me sad about what I was missing out on for so long.
My internet gaming experience took a long break around the time DSL started becoming normal and I was still limping along on 48.8 dial up. I recall around having good times in Tribes around '99-'01 and then trying Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six around '02 and getting wrecked. FINALLY upgraded to DSL around the time CC hit. I recall seeing it in a store and thinking no fucking way i'm paying $15 a month for any game, and I picked up a game called Universal Combat. Basically it was single version of Planetside on Steroids and overly complicated and kinda buggy. Years later I worked with a guy I played Tribes with who got introduced to PS. He came in going on and on about the epicness and chaos and playing that first night until it started getting light outside and he realized he needed to go to work. So I DL'd PS and got in game. Same as many I went into VR shot a couple weapons and thought "pshaa I know how to play video games" So I clicked on instant action from the menu and ended up on Ishundar. I recall grabbing a Harasser and driving around aimlessly for what must have been over an hour, came across a purple base, I jumped out of the driver seat, sneak up to the front door heart pounding. Hack the door get inside and proceed to sneak around the whole base, hiding in corners then sprinting behind a boxes in the basement and running from one hallway to the next, expecting someone to jump out from a corner the whole time. I eventually made it to the CC (I think it must have been Hanish wile the Fight was at Baal) I wait, nothing, pull out the REK to hack the base... and there was no link. After getting into the actual fight and getting killed, I recall my feelings at being able to choose from several different options for re-spawn and being protected and the spawn room/terms being kinda protected being an awesome. No getting sniper camped at random spawn points, able to take some time get my stuff together go AFK for a beer in relative safety. I do recall circling a CY in the Harasser spamming VNG till someone jumped in and being possibly the worst driver in the history of the game and being responsible for killing a good handful of gunners. I will blame them, however for jumping into a Harasser being driven by a Graybie. |

Planetside 1. I was a bit unsure whether to pay and play. A friend said "what the heck, let's give it a try." So in 2003, just a week after its release we signed up. It took awhile to configure and trying of various characters. Learning curve wasn't that difficult, just a little tedious. The tech tree was a pain, and the weapon capabilities of each faction seemed over and under balanced. All in all, we got used to it, and enjoyed the game. Then we decided to form our own Clan, or Guild, whatever it was called then. Thus "Old Farts" in the Terran Republic on the Markov server was born.
We enjoyed the game despite its limitations, until those battle bots were created, and kind of took the fun out the game play. To make a long story short, we just decided the game was getting a bit stale, and the "Old Farts" decided time for a change. Old Farts didn't entirely go away though. We just settled on the Velen Server of World of Warcraft right after that game started up, and it's still going strong. Anyway, that's it in a nutshell, Now to see how this new version of Planetside will shape up is anyone's guess. We shall see. All in all I believe the game was pretty fun, intense at times, but basically fun, despite its limitations. Hawk and Vongar (me) had good fun teaming up in the Terran Tank. I drove, he gunned, and we a grand time destroying everything in sight. And we were very good doing that. Enough reminiscing. Take care all, and thanks for listening. maybe we'll see some of you on Planetside 2. Time will tell. |

I ran around in Agile with a Punisher, loaded with rockets, for my first session or two. I was so happy when I finally killed someone, as I had been getting insta-killed (or so it felt back than) up until than.
I remember that first kill being outside, the guy was running up a hill and I was running down and I hit him dead on. He must've been near dead from a previous encounter, but I didn't know much about how it all worked at the time. |

my first hour was all the way back in April 2003 and what I recall of it was finding some of my clan mates hopping into a Galaxy and setting out to retake Forseal from the NC, we arrived over the tower next to the base and everyone hotdropped but me and the pilot had to land to let me out lol... I hadn't a fing clue what I was doing
Pretty much spent the rest of that day being equally as terrible at everything while very slowly learning the ropes from my friends while we were involved in massive battles the like of which I'd never seen or experienced before. damn that's a sweet ass prize!

I don't but I do remember glimpses of moments that stood out, I guess my first hour wasn't one of them.
Taking out long streams of enemy in forests before being brought down, things like that I remember. Holding against massive odds 3-4 to 1, some of those moments I remember. Stepping out into a huge battle, with weapons going off everywhere, feeling the epic scope of it all - only to be found in PS1 . |
