They would never be able to implement BFRs again no matter how they spun it. The negativity associated with them would cause the entire community to spin out of control.

I never got the negativity associated with them.

Maybe because I came back to PS1 later, bought Core Combat and did the imprinting (a bit slow at times, hard to find the fights in the caves).

I would never go head-on into a facility with the two-manner. it was more of a siege-breaker to me.

Flying variant was fun, but so much more fragile. Lot's of fun though.

I remember seeing the video of guys taking them down solo with decimators, scary stuff. So I ask, hopefully without causing a great deal of disturbance, what was all the negativity about. I clearly missed it by the time I came back to PS1.

Would you honestly not envisage a return of BFR's in some shape or form? Not a carbon copy of PS1 BFR's necessarily, but something that adds to PS2 and makes it stand out a bit more.

It is really the symbolic presence as much as anything and what they (BFR's) have come to represent in the overall "what went wrong with PS1".

There are a ton of different factors that lead to a population decline of PS1 and deserved or not BFRs have taken the brunt of the blame. What that means is they now symbolize ruin and downfall and the epitome of the Devs crapping on the player base.

A bit harder to find now with PS2 having been out for a few months but a year ago or so if you found mention of Planetside on some random game forum or searched through the comments on any random youtube video about PS1 you would find comment after comment "I loved the game until BFR's" or "I played from release until BFRs".

It has just become worked into the lore of PS1 that BFR's were the death of the game. There is no arguing because it is coming from a sentimental point of view, BFR's killed the game period end of story, and it is so pervasive there is just no room for recovery.

Now what about them killed it? A load of different things. The mechanics to get them were so different than anything else in the game, left a very bitter taste to a lot of people. They lagged the fuck out of the game. Even after they were nerfed the hitboxes and shield played havoc on FPS for many people that never had issues anywhere else. They were stupid OP when the first came out, and the single driver/gunner for such a game changing vehicle didn't sit well with the PS1 style *cough* reaver *cough*.

Any way as I said the hatred is just ingrained and irrational. It is on the level of racism really, but the issue moving forward is what it represents in Planetside is Devs slapping the players in the face. I just don't see how that gets put into the game properly.

Hey Hamma here is an idea to share with the devs, how about opening up a "prototype" hall in the VR area to let people try prototypes in a controlled enviromnent ahead of time to balance them.

Introduce a BFR or other weapons/vehicles/abilities/ect. into the prototype area and release them if/when the players thing they are balanced and make sense.

I know this is a longshot but it could be done in the VR area. They could have done it with the 3 new rocket launchers for example tweek them in a patch or 2 ahead of time in the VR prototype area then release when ready.

That's pretty much what a test server is for.

The problem PS1 had with BFRs is a pretty simple one: The shield.

The shield was the main defence of any BFR. While a single BFR wasnt much of a problem in your usual big fight (they were bullet magnets, really, EVERYONE shot them), they where HELL in small fights.

If you dont have the firepower or the coordination to kill a BFR, then it will lay waste to whatever you bring. No balancing could potentially fix that, because whenever you make BFRs balanced in Small fights, they would be instantly dead in zergs.

Thats the big difference between the OP lib of the early PS2 days. A damaged lib was a damaged lib. Shoot a bullet at a lib and it looses some health, and has to get away to fix itself up. BFRs didnt have that. Shoot a bullet at a BFR and it could just stay there, soaking up the damage, unless enough DPS to bring down the shield and actually hurt the BFR.

BFRs in Planetside 2 would have exactly the same problem, unless they dont get a shield. But if you take away their shield, you dont have a powerful mech anymore, you just have a tall bullet magnet.

I dont think i would need to go into the amount of players PS2 would loose instantly when BFRs make a return. The majority of PS1 vets would be gone, and with them pretty much most of the community that is constantly arguing with itself and the devs to improve the game.
Dont open scars.

Fair enough, I can understand that its what they symbolise that makes it very hard to accept anything that looks or sounds like a BFR for a lot of people. Even if I do not share such a revulsion.

All I'll say is that I must've got into mine when a lot of these issues were ironed out (and a lot of the playerbase quit, unfortunately).

Its a shame, as for me they set the game apart. I'll say it again: I'm not suggesting the addition of an exact copy, but for something that added originality to a game I really enjoyed. I certainly don't want the community to split/divide/breakdown over such a thing though.

Maybe with time...
