1- How does the "world pass" system work, exactly?
You inster a code while creating your character that allows you to choose your server. Get the code from friends that your joining.
2- When I pick an advanced profession, do I lose my original job?
Nope, it becomes a sub-job. The 2nd job isnt quite as powerfull as your main.... ask bohica im no expert here
3- can I have both a second profession and an advanced profession?
no, you can only ahve 2 jobs. 1 Main, 1 Sub.
4- Any PSU style site for it? With newb guides and such?
Umm yeah, i few I suppose, Allakhazam ( http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/ ) has a nice site. (PM me and ill try to get u more links) If your going to play on Kujata (with PSU and BOHICAns), im sure you can get help

I've been contemplating buying this game. I'm no stranger to MMRPG's, but I'm curious as to how the battle system works? Is it like EQ? More like an FF game? Would it be worth shelling out $50 that I could spend on other people for gifts? Just need some feedback. Thanks!

Mix of eq and FFXI.

Select target, lock on so you cant be KS'd, your character grabs his/her weapon (swords sound leet) and swing away.

Once you build up a certain amount of "tp", which is gained through making hits, and getting hit, you can unleash "Weapon skills"

These weapon skills can be timed with others skills, in order to form a reaction that does massives amount of damage.

And then of course there are spells.

You can physically avoid attacks, but sometimes its not worth it, because, sometimes the monster faces you too quickly, and attacks you anyways, or, you will run into your party-mates, which is annoying.

there is mouse support, but its hard. You can hardly see the mouse (white on white) sometimes, and it gets moved alot not under your control (going through menus etc.)

But you get usted to the KB controls fairly quickly, and then you dont notice it at all.

The menus work like the windows start menu. Its easier to use the keyboard.

Mouse support is as good as NFS: U's... you're better off using the KB.

no you dont, you just gain access to being able to choose that job at your mog house.
once you pick it, you will probably set it as your main job, starting at level 1 x
x being your advanced job. advanced jobs are acquired by doing specific quests for them.

3- can I have both a second profession and an advanced profession?

yes, you can level every profession. just not use all of them at once.
you must choose a main job to play with (can be switched at mog house)
sub job is a quest to gain the ability to use it, and it can only be half of the main job you set.
