If you want a LONG series check out the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (He's the original author of Conan the Barbarian series). WoT includes 11 mega-novels and in every book he introduces more and more characters. He doesn't stop introducing them, but the funny thing is he develops almost all of them, so it's always worth your time remembering who is who. I've read 1 through 9. He just released volume 10 and a prequel novel, but I'm not sure if that finishes up the series.
