I just got Far Cry and it's definately the best single player game ever on a PC. It beats halo and half-life. I think the only thing that could possibly challenge it's single player game will be half-life 2.
BTW, the engine that runs far cry is awsome. I could see a lot of potential for great mods with it. It also runs on the GameCube and XBox. Too bad the multiplayer fan base isn't big enough to warrent the effort it takes to make a total conversion mod. Oh yeah. I've seen the water in HL2. It definately beats Far Cry. Hell, the graphics from HL2 beat FarCry in almost every respect. But, Far Cry is actually available to play, where as HL2 may not make it to release until HL3 is almost done.

Battlefield is old and tired. UT2k4 is old and tired. Far Cry is something new and very engaging. The only down side is that it is primarily single player and thusly, you can devour it in days. Single player games have thier place even now with the advent of so many multiplayer games. I have not has as much fun playing a single player game since KOTOR and Half-life as I have had lately with Far Cry
