I dunno, I figure if you live in the States, which is full of Spanish-speaking people, depending on where you live, you should know at least some very basic Spanish. You don't need to be able to carry on a long conversation, but you should know how to say "Hi", "Bye", and "My name is ______". Hell, I'll teach you right here: Buenos Dias, senor-Good day, sir. Buenas Tardes, senorita-Good afternoon, miss. Buenas Noches, senora-Good night, madam. Hasta Luego-Bye for now. Adios-Bye for a while Me llamo (pronounced Me yamo) [name]-My name is [name] Como se llama?-Who are you? I gotta admit, I am having a damn good time messing with Lee.

I came from Youngstown, OH before i moved down to Florida for college. I grew up around that shit and I'll say it right now, i like rap. I like it quite a bit. Youngstown Ohio is 45% Black, 40% Italian, 10% Irish, and 5% Unknown .. Rap and Spaghetti grows on you pretty fucking fast when you grow up pretty much drowned in it. .. I love that shit. Keep in coming Lil' John. OOOKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
EDIT: by the way, this doesn't mean i don't listen to other forms of music, and i'm certianly not "Ghetto." I dress like every other American Eagle/Hollister/Abercrombie *** out there. I just like rap. I listen to all sorts of shit and if you check out the "What Are You Listening to Right Now" thread you'll see that i have a rather broad spectrum of musical taste. I just also happen to like rap. i guess you just have to be subjected to certain aspects of the culture to have it grow on you like it did on me. heh.

Man, I'm a conservative myself, I hung out at the Political debate boards for months. It isn't a conspiracy. These Mexican illegals come across our non-existent borders, and they won't learn our language. But they manage to take our jobs, and they buy our goods. Companies need to be able to communicate to these people, to sell them stuff, and you should probably be able to speak with them so they don't give you supreme pizza when you ask for pepperoni. If you're bi-lingual, it makes you a more valuable employee than the guy who's monolingual.

Ok, well I'm gonna shy away from the whole illegal mexican bit for now, and respond to the whole rap deal here. Ok here goes:
1) Rap is, well, something I don't find enjoyable. I rank MOST (not all) of it up there with Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. (Side note - most rap artists are not nearly as hot as Britney or Jessica...) Anyways, the reason I do that is because most rap follows the style of out current popular music. That is, the artists play on the ignorance of the masses* and pump out cookie-cutter music that has virtually no meaning whatsoever. That, to me, makes it worthless. 2) Right now, I'm attending school for music. Because of this, I've been exposed to countless records and CD's of music that ranges from Gregorian chant (the old-school monks that sing in unison) all the way up to contemporary composers, such as Charles Ives, Aaron Copland, and the swing composers like Duke Ellington, Joe Oliver, Johnny Dodds, etc. I think I can say without sounding like a stuck-up prick that I could pretty much tell you all that I've heard a damn huge amount of music. The point of me mentioning this is simple: sounds that are thrown together without any theoretical reason does not make music. Likewise, something that pumps out a strong beat DOES NOT MAKE MUSIC! Pop culture today, rap included, doesn't seem to understand that little tidbit. 3) Some rap artists actually do know what they're doing. I will freely admit that. I know that some of them actually study poetry, learn the art of it, understand it, and try to apply that to there work. However, these artists are few. Jut my two...well, three cents. * -- By ignorance of the masses, I mean that most people don't have enough of a musical education to know that noise that goes "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM" in a steady pattern doesn't mean music.

By the way, all those "Hardcore rappaz from 'da hizzooooood, Holla!" aren't very hardcore. Nor are they gangster,s they rap about living on "'da strizzeeeeeeeetz" or in "jizzail" but really, they're living in some huge ass mansion in Miami. Their music does NOT mean anything, it's just a ploy to make money.
Which is why I don't buy music. |
