OK, wait. Pop is a genre of music. Pop is not some kind of like fungal growth that happens from coming in contact with MTV. Pop punk is a sort of bastardization of punk guitar chords mixed with a lighter overall tone, ala NFG. Green Day, from what I can surmise from listening to them as of late, are pop-punk. Even before this, when they were still on MTV, I would probably call them alt, definately not full-on punk though. Also, your point on Modest Mouse is stupid in general. My issue with MTV now airing stuff from Franz Ferdinand, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Modest Mouse is that they seem to be taking a few semi-known post-punk mod rock properties and wave them around as their "cool kid" property. They called MM "newcomers" despite them being around and making records for 14 years. So my problem is with MTV breaking its normal genre borders, adopting semi-obscure music as its own, then not even giving a shit as to where these bands came from as long as it changes public opinion for the network. I still love MM, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Franz Ferdinand, the problem I have is inherantly with MTV's conduct with them as properties.

My point is frog, that before they are aired on MTV people considered them punk, now they become pop-punk, i find that bullshit, the only band ever aired on MTV that didnt get the rep ive seen is Cold. But i havent really heard anything of them ever since they were on MTV. I see no problem with people simply stating that they dont like the band, but its just bullshit for their reason being that its "Pop-punk"
In other words your telling me that all the bands you named including greenday started up in hope of someday being considered "pop" or some hybrid like "pop-punk"? i really doubt that. Last edited by Heavygain; 2004-09-18 at 05:42 PM. |

They became pop-punk because they changed their genre of music from alt to pop punk. You can be both indie and pop punk, whatever exposure yuo get doesn't change what music you play, either you or production companies do. Bottom line is that Green Day BECAME pop punk, It was not imposed upon them by MTV or the tastes of the MTV generation.

Dude, they were playing the same type of music two years ago. They didnt change their shit for MTV, or anyone else, they let themselves be broadcasted through mtv, i dont really have much against MTV, i just dont like the fact that they decide what is popular and good and whats not, MTV developed taste in them and all that did was bring MORE success to them.

Well than blame the market for being over-saturated with similar music. Back when Green Day was all there was for their particular sound, they were shuffled into alt. Then, as of late, a whole lot more bands came out sounding like that and sounding the same quite a bit, so they were forced to place a new genre on them. Considering the trendwhoring of the punk resurgeance combined with the fact that they were lighter fare music-wise, they decided on pop-punk. Green Day is now coming back into a field where their music has already been broached into a category thanks to the army of pop punk that is already out there. And by the way, the success of a band realy doesn't matter to me, I just think that Green Day and its more contemporary subsidiaries suck really bad.

Not quite my friend. Your saying that because there are so many more of the bands now, that they are no longer alternate? and have broken off to make a new genre called "pop-punk"? thats just fucktarded my friend, so basicly when a new band witha n orignal sound comes out and is considered say, rock, then more bands come out with a sound pretty close to it, it becomes "pop-rock"? then why dont we have "pop-country" or things like that? If you really want to continue this argument i have plenty more reasons, im just fucking sick of the fucking retardedness.

OK, wait a second again here. What I'm saying is that back when Green Day was relatively original, they were shuffled into the alternative bracket because there realyl was no good word to broach them. So, they sort of fade out for a little bit, and during that time, literally in 6 months, a slew of bands who all, if what you're saying about Green Day sounding the same throughout is true, who sound like Green Day pop up. This causes a bit of a problem in that now this style of music has come into a genre of itself, so rather than now being "alternative" it has dominated the popular music scene in a relatively short time. The thing about this music is that, at its core, it uses the guitar chords used in almost every punk song ever, but the songs themselves are of lighter fare. So, "pop punk" is just a combination of the use of guitars in a manner similar to punk with a more widely accepted song structure. And, the current "country" music is indeed pop-country. True country music is bluegrass in the vein of what you'll hear on the Oh Brother! Where Art Thou? soundtrack. I to could continue to explain how this came about, but basically GD came back in a time when their style of music already had it's own tag.

Yeah his comment was childish and all. Yet I do agree Goths piss me off. They want death and talk about death. So if they wanna die they should just kill themselves already and make the world a better place. Remember if your a goth, its down the road not across the street.
