Yeh but Planetsides shooting was the worst of any FPS I've played, it didn't even feel like the bullets had any physics to them. The only reason Planetside was so fun was because it was so huge, once that novelty worn off everyone started leaving because capturing the same bases over and over got boring and the combat sucked.

What they should have done is added them massive capital bases they kept saying they would add, which were like mini cities. I would have even settled for redesigning the maps so the cave structures were on the actual island map because them zip lines were mega fun. Then nothing was planned for the game, it just went dead so people saw that SOE weren't planning to do anything with it and left. Frigging the Christmas event pissed a lot of people off because we had the stupid hats and presents and lights on the trees which just had the worst art to it ever. Then the bending happened which got rid of Oshur to add 4 mini islands that played badly and no one ever went to like the Caves. The map got redesigned so it looked like something someone had made on MSPaint. Oh and BFRs which ruined the whole balance of the game, that was the final nail really and people never came back. So Planetside has been left to slowly die ever since. I tried it last year but saw the crap flamethrower effects and quit lol... just terrible. If Planetside 2 doesn't get the shooting right then people wont stick around again because the size of the battles quickly wears off. |

Personally, sound and animation glitches aside, I thought it looked great. Took a good second+ of sustained firing to kill people, which is how fast PS1 was up close.
And we don't even know how it sounds as we just have a recording. |

I can at least agree with the OP on the point that sounds are very important. I've always been impressed with how chunky the CSS weapons felt, and that was almost all sound effects.
That said, as has been mentioned, there's a lot of iteration to go yet. Even explicitly mentioned in the GDC fragment you posted - I think Higby was all too aware of any placeholders in there and had to point it out Plus it wasn't a direct feed. |

People tend to focus on graphics when they're looking at footage of a new game, but sound effects actually make a world of difference when they're done right. CSS is a great example of good sound effects. I also liked how the bass from explosions in Tribes: Ascend carries much further than the higher frequencies, so you get this backdrop of distant thuds that gradually grow clearer as you ski to the battle.

I'll have to see more guns in Beta before I judge them fully, but I'm more concerned about the Vanguard. Wouldn't such a massive cannon have more recoil than that? The cannon barely moved and the tank didn't move at all.

There should at least be a jolt when firing a vanguard. |

I don't know how many games you've played. I don't know how good you are. But in my vast gaming experience one thing always showed me that games with really fast TTK and really slow movement (PS. BF and etc.) will become a kill fest rather than a teambased shooter. Now you thing that it's so cool but it won't be when people start camping, saying that they are "protecting" or "securing" the area. The best moments of a game is when you are constantly on the move, flanking doing things with your team and not sitting behind a corner all the time. Fast TTK will bring just that. So i think lowering the TTK is for the best cause it will promote teamwork and not personal stats and "ZOMG IDA GOD!!!!!!11111!". |

(of course changing things in Alpha is probably easier and a bit less time-consuming for coders....) and talking about BF3... It's one of the games which influenced dev team and Higby. (background of Higby's monitor..) But basically they said many times that PS2 is FPS first. So, I think the dev team also knows there are still many rooms for improvements. And they should. Hopefully, they will really listen to us this time around. Last edited by cellinaire; 2012-03-08 at 04:43 AM. |

Externally as well as from first person. Looking at those vans in convoy it would look a bit more badass if they recoiled slightly with the shot. Whether the future tanks are stable when firing or not, adding that as an imperfection would make them seem more real. |
