They want to see TR so bad. Take a picture of the ANP or ANA for them. Hahaha

Here's how TR rolls. Marauder.

i´ve got a question for the older us soldiers:

is it true, that back in the days the us army tried to use a modified version of doom for general teamwork training? i read about this in some retro articles and couldn´t help smiling. not because it would be ridiculous to use a game for military training, but because a game like planetside would be perfect for such a task. especially because in such an open persistant world predicting enemy behaviour would come close to reallife.

however, i like to have more rl soldiers playing the game to have more players outside of the zerg ;-)

Firstly, thank you for your service, great picture!

Secondly, someone with your sort of integrity should know better then to fall for that corporate run NC 'rebellion' propaganda. The TR fight for justice and the betterment of humanity, join us before it's to late!

Yes, the trainer was not meant to make you a better shot but to train to squad tactics, situational awareness, and CQBT, etc, for rookies. At the end of my military career I worked on DARPA RealWorld which essentially nods to the gaming industry. Why reinvent a physics engine when a gaming company already figured it out? This strategy of licensing and modifying existing engines is way cheaper than getting Lockheed Martin to build your simulator.

A company I consult for was at GDC, and I asked them to drop by the demo. They should use Forgelight, baby!

I've been in infantry (HOOAH RANGER) units and other units that were not infantry. In all of that time, throughout ten years, I never played a video game as a combat simulator, sole exception being the large-scale Bradley/Abrams simulators that are housed in enormous warehouses on certain installations. Those are large pods designed to simulate the driver/turret crew for each vehicle. This was in the late 90s.

Now, I have done M16 range simulations using a Super NES and a specially-modified M16. But the ones we used did not play Doom. It was more like a lame version of Duck Hunt.

yeah, that´s what i was thinking ;-)
was this "army of america" game also used officially? or was this just used for marketing and recruiting?

on a sidenote it´s kind of wierd, that modern weapon systems try to be usable and look like videogames, while modern videogames try to look like those weaponsystems ;-)

We've used a video game type program to learn Foward Observation and Call for Fire type skills. We also use an indoor range with CO2 rifles that fire at targets on a projecter. It's a piece or junk.

The Doom project was likely a small-scale test. A more recent example is DARWARS. Another thing that has been tested recently is using VR and FPS's to treat PTSD by re-living IED ambushes. Don't know if it is effective.

See my last post. Ergo, I want to say it was marketing and recruiting only. Sorry, but holding the down and forward arrow keys does not teach you to low crawl. Pressing a mouse button does not teach you to shoot. At best, an MMO can teach you teamwork and coordination.

I'm old. I got out in 2004 after ten years. Video games weren't being used then, either. They may be in use now - technology and gaming are highly attractive. I have some younger friends who went through military training as recently as still-in-training. They do something called rollover training where they put you in a Humvee mockup and flip that bitch over. I don't know about the IED ambush simulator but I do know about PTSD, personally. The last fucking thing I want to relive is a goddamned IED ambush - and I don't care how therapeutic it is, you put me in that son of a bitch and you're looking at a six million dollar wreckage when I get done tearing the fucker into pieces. I can't imagine that it's effective but bear in mind that I'm not a psychologist or therapist, just a combat veteran.

And to keep from derailing the OP, how about some troops with a TR patch? Come on, throw us a friggin' bone here.

read my original question, i was just asking if it was used for teamwork training. i know that playing videogames doesn´t make you a marksman in rl. (though most german politicians actually do think that´s the case)

oh and on topic, the pics are really cool! was thinking about putting up a troll with the last marauderpic like "tr marauder pic!" stating that forgelight keeps looking better and better ;-)

I either misread it or misunderstood it. My fault entirely, sorry.

I can see I'm going to have to dig out my ACUs and find myself a custom TR ACU-subdued patch in order to counteract the heresy I find in this thread.
