One of those? There was an AGP model, too, IIRC.

You do realize Microsoft doesn't even support XP anymore, right? Why should other companies?

Also, seriously -- upgrade. It's a security risk not to, because any new security holes that get discovered will NOT get patches.

As for why I don't want a DX9 version -- lots of the features I want to see from DX10 are ones that will affect gameplay. Things that will go into smoke and explosion effects, cloud rendering, grass and foliage, cloaking effects... People with the hardware to run DX10 won't use it, no matter how awesome it looks, if it's just obscuring things that people running in DX9 mode can see that DX10 users can't.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. i'll admit, it's pretty much what i'd been expecting (and dreading).
To be honest, it's not so much getting a new graphics card or computer components that's going to be expensive, so much as upgrading to windows7 (because seriously, who would willingly "upgrade" to Vista?). i suppose i might be able to afford to fix up my computer by the time the real release comes around, but i guess that means i'll be missing out completely on beta...

I'm betting on my HP Pavilion g7 with a Radeon HD 6470M. It has Directx11 so I think I'm good. If it wont run it then... Well, shit.

legit win 7 costs $99. What substantial computer upgrades cost much less than that?

Re: DirectX 9

Yes, the game will support Win XP and DX9. BUT, BIG RED FUCKING BUT:

DX9 support is one thing, but dont expect the game to run fine on a Geforce 7800 or a Ati X1900 or whatever in those series. Those GPUs are quite old.

The big question is: Why support DX9 anyway? Its outdated, pointless, and has issues. DX10 has loads of features that boost performance and quality. Besides that, nobody with a DX9 only card can hope to run forgelight, means those cars within the 5 year old hardware support list are DX10 anyway. The only thing that prevents using DX10 would be Win XP. And whoever uses win XP with a DX10 card is a fool anyway.

Mate, save some bucks, get yourself some new hardware. If you need a hand, say so, bunch of us got a clue and can get you a cheap, yet powerful, system.

Also, once you upgrade components, use the windows 8 consumer preview and save up for full OS in the meantime.

Win 7 + a new decent graphics card can be less than $200 if you're really on a budget (cheaper if you're in college or are a teacher because of education discounts). You could even sell some old stuff you might have lying around to get enough

If you read what I wrote I said, he didnt have to spend alot of money to get something lest a little better then hes using and DX11. Not to mention it can be used as a gaming card just not a top of the line one, and not all cards that are newer are better. I got a simulare card for a friend and it runs games realy well, should run PS2 ok though, but runs PS1 at 150fps. There is always better quality cards out there but when your on a budget like he says he is, dont deter people by making them think they need to spend more money they cant afford if they can get away with somthing cheaper for now.
I listed a low end Idea that will work for cheap if he was worried about the DX9 not working for him. If he posted what his budget was and his current hardware, and location eg.. Canada, US, UK..., I am sure the community and I, would post links and info that could help him upgrade or build a better rig.

5450 was low end when it was released in 2009. The card is ancient by today's standards. You are better off with a Intel graphics to be honest almost. If you are telling someone to get a potential card for gaming those cards I mentioned are the absolute minimum. They're like $10-$20 more then that card you linked anyway.

ya i heard MS doesn't support xp anymore but then why do i still get windows update that include malware removal every few months or so? I don't see the point of upgrading since the only game that i can't run on my computer is BF3 cause its not dx9 so i got it on ps3 problem solved.

* oh nvm solved my own question from their site end of Extended support is April 8th 2014 *

SOE aiming for the masses and well theres still a ton of xp users

I wouldn't call 20% of VALVe's customers "massive" (yes I am aware that sample may not be extropatable to the general gaming populace, but it's the best we'll get~)

Anyhow, as others pointed out, if you have a DX9 card you probably won't be able to run it regardless.

"Masses" certainly play games like BF3 which was a huge selling title on PC. Better to "force" stragglers to upgrade than ship an already dated game.

It's time to join the modern world, TBH. Once the console generation cycles, DX9 has no hope of sticking around.
No card for the DX9 era is going to be good enough and if you've already got DX10 hardware, there's no good excuse for not going to Win7 on a gaming computer (except, maybe, waiting on Win8?).
