Like every other MMO, you don't need a guild / outfit / corporation, but joining one can certainly add to the experience. The level of camaraderie and satisfaction I've gotten out of playing with such organizations has almost always been worth it.

If you want to be a support player like me, you're going to be standing there with a sad face a lot of the time if you have nobody to repair without being part of an outfit.
It really depends on what sort of character you want to be. |

Sadly, yes, to experience the full game. People in outfits are apparently special snowflakes that deserve extra consideration for having appended an outfit tag to their name, so it seems that they will be getting outfit customization options in the form of bonus equipment options that the outfit can specialize in.
Basically, you'll probably want to join one that has specialized in an area you like, so that you can benefit from these specializations as well. Its a shame, but nothing to be done about it. |

When I started playing PS1 in 2004, I was a lone-wolf. It was an amazing game to play as a lone wolf, it brought moments that no other game could. But what I found over time was that I would see the same players fighting by my side over days and weeks. Some were helpful, healing and repairing and were courteous and polite when I repaired them. We shared jokes and laughs and eventually I got asked to join an outfit (Pandion Knights, Werner). They were a great bunch of people and honestly the game got 10 times better once I was playing as a full squad member - planning out what we would do to attack a base, having theme nights in tanks or liberators, doing gen holds and gen drops, doing fast response. That was, and I think always will be, the best period of gaming I have ever enjoyed.
With hindsight, it could have gone very differently. I don't think I'm suited to a hardcore or militaristic outfit, so I was lucky to find an easy-going group who just wanted to have the same kind of fun I did. In short, lone-wolfing will be fun and awesome in PS2, but don't exclude the chance that you might meet a group of like-minded individuals. And if you do join an outfit and you find they're not for you, then move on because there are different outfits with different styles. And speaking as an original lone-wolf myself, I can honestly say you will get more from the game if you find a team you enjoy playing with. |

In fact I got my awards from doing that more often than not. (Easier to revive a bunch of randoms who die a lot than a coordinated outfit squad that doesn't.) |

You don't have to join an outfit in PS or PS2, but honestly I don't think you'll truly experience the awesomeness of the game unless you do.
The game is designed for teamwork, and that's what will lead to the most success and epic moments. Personally I found PS rather boring all by myself, but even with one other person to team up with, drive a tank, fly a lib, be a wingman, etc - everything changed. And the first time you hop into a galaxy with a dozen guys in it and drop over a hot base and take an objective - that memory will stay with you. Depending on outfit you could be doing that a lot, but you probably won't do it much solo. |

When he mentioned that I thought he was just spit balling more than saying "We're doing it". As far as I know most all of the outfit stuff is still in the idea phase. If they DO give you stronger equipment because you're in an outfit, then I think my "This game is built around squad combat" thought process is even more true.
