I'm personally convinced my AD&D experience will allow me to significantly own everyone, bar none.

Especially with my +10 "Vanu Bighter" two handed sword.

Why don't people like run-n-gun games? If they're done well, they're a lot of fun. More like playing a game and less immersive, that's the way I like it.

I'll admit BF1942 was probably my favorite FPS so far, but still...don't bash decent games.

I have seen several posts on here that apply to the public servers of Quake 3. Public servers are usually composed of novice gamers, and you will see a scattering of skilled players in those. To get a true feel of skill in the Quake community, it's almost crucial to participate on teams and in matches.

I played quake for a little over two years, and I totally disagree with a lot of the comments that have been made. Yes, a lot of people will spam rockets, but as said before, these are the novice players. In a match between two skilled teams, you will see lots of prediction skill, lots of aiming skill.

Our outfit consists of mostly Quake players, several that have placed highly in LAN tournaments and others that are part of respected teams. From what I have heard from my bros in Project: Cell, the beta has been a breeze-by.

Therefore, I think the comment:

Yeah, and thoughs Quake **** are screwed. Just let 'em think whatever they wanna think. When the game is released. Own they asses.
... is rather funny

Anyways, good luck to everyone on the battlefield.. doesn't really matter what game it's like, it matter who wins

Im just wondering, whats your system? what card yah have? im looking into buying one for my 2gig 512 DDR

whats your full system and what card do you have?

as for ps and quake, i hate the way quake is, you strafe really fast and you jump really high and you aim perfectly the whole time you are running way unreallisticly, that reminds me, I hope it isnt like Unreal too

Ya, Quake didn't have much of a realistic side at all. It was really fun because it was a major adrenaline game. However, I'd like to see a more strategic game in PlanetSide.

Just about every game gives its players a certain aspect of skill. Counter-Strike players may have some advantages in covert operations, Quakers advantages in messy offensive missions. If everyone came from one game, I'm sure PlanetSide would be much more one-sided in the way it was played. With the excitement of players in MANY different gaming environments, PlanetSide is almost guaranteed to be the best game of its generation. In my mind, it will last for years to come.

p.s. - I don't see Everquest players doing a whole lot unless they played FPS games as well. Just because the game has the massive-multiplayer quality doesn't mean Everquest players have any advantages.

Lol i love this. People telling each other who will be better because of previous games. Ill bet on almost any odds that none of you have played PS, and therefore, have no idea what your talking about. The way i see it, PS will be like any other game. You get in with skills from anything else, adapt to new systems, and slowly get better. Saying "i come from tribes so i have an advantage over CS players" is complete bullshit becuase you have no idea how the game will play out in the end. Play any FPS you can to work on twitch skills, it doesnt matter which game. BTW i have played everything from Doom, to unreal, to unreal tournament (and 2k3), to halflife (almost every internet mod), quake, SOF, RB6, and almost any other FPS. Each takes practice to get good with.

My old quake style:

asdwasdwasdwasdwasdwasdwas. I would just press those as fast as I could while shooting I couldn't be beat.

Too bad I won't be able to show off my "asdw" skills in PS.

That's great, and not to disparage Quake (or Quake 2, or Quake 3). There is an immense amount of skill involved at the high end of competitive gaming, sure.

But the kind of teamwork needed in Tribes (and perhaps BF1942 now) is really unparalleled in the Quake series. In those games, being really good was enough -- and you could transfer between games pretty easily, and within a week or less a Q3 ace can become a RtCW or SOF2 ace.

But. It would probably take that same player several months of fairly intensive study (SERIOUS study and practice) to get anywhere near competition-level in Tribes. Tribes has such an incredibly HIGH high end. A predictive shot in Q3 can only be so good, because the distances involved can only be so long, the velocities of the players can only be so great (important), and the mutual angles of travel can only be so awkward and disparate. Tribes is pretty much unlimited in all of those aspects. This is because, even with the limited predictive shots you get in Q3, it's still mostly whack-a-rat 3D. It's about phenomenal accuracy and clicking the right pixels at the right time. Now, POSITIONING is also important at the high end, and timing -- but movement, and velocity, are not an integral part of the game (unless you count bouncers, which are limited by being in a fixed location, and are often a death trap because they leave you hanging).

In Tribes, aside from the laser rifle, every single shot is a predictive shot.

So, Tribes is an extremely flexible, extremely deep game. In a game that is SO flexible, SO deep, and that has integrated velocity and MOMENTUM so deeply into the ordinary run-and-gun model, how do you get consistently good AS A TEAM?

You practice. And practice. And practice. And you aren't all just practicing individual skills (with, in the higher levels, a bit of team timing thrown in). You're practicing tactics, integrated tightly into every decision you make; you have to learn what works and what doesn't until you can FEEL the correct decisions.

It is because of the highly organized TEAM aspect of Tribes (with different people taking different roles, working together as a squad, kicking ass individually in a method optimized for the Greater Good of the team) that Tribes players will likely be able to adapt so quickly.

Again, it takes a lot of skill to be competitive in Q3. But the curve is very short. In Tribes, the learning curve almost never ends -- I don't know of many players (maybe a few from IE, heh) that have totally mastered it. In a wide-open game like PS, I expect this ability to master new things will allow the Tribes players to be a force to be reckoned with.
