Stop SOPA From Becoming Law

Moving webbased companies offshore is exactly what the US does NOT need. As much as it is about our freedoms, our choking economy could not afford such a blow.

To attack piracy you must provide a better service than the pirate site. That's why you have Pandora, Vevo, last.FM, Hulu, Steam, ifuckingTunes. The day of Bearshare and Limewire is dwindling as more people flock to these garunteed safe ways to enjoy entertainment. There will always be the few who take advantage, no different than in any market. But to essentially stop a website like Youtube because some dipshit upload Snooki getting lit up in a bar is batshit insane. Or say a site like this because someone wanted to unofficially restart a Hot Girls thread and took pictures from a Playboy magazine. Nononononononono.

As a computer security profession I know how much abuse and misuse will come from the passing of a bill like this. If congress passes this bill it will be congress and a handful of millionaires VS every one else. I tell you this and I say it with pride: SECOND AMENDMENT WILL PROTECT ALL OTHERS FROM VIOLATION!!! VIVA LA REVOLUTION!!!

That being said don't do something stupid like go on a shooting spree. Do contact congress and tell them if they want to keep their jobs (and their heads) to have the common sense not to pass this bill.

I actually watched most of the judiciary committee "debate" last week (well watched isn't the right word, more like survived with minor brain damage), and every single congressman who made a statement about the bill (about 10 in all) started with "I don't know much about technology and I don't understand any of the technical stuff in this bill", but more than half went on to describe how awesome it is anyway. Not all of them though. There was a small group of congressmen who spent the entire time fighting the bill, putting forth one amendment after another (all of which were shot down), pleading with the rest of the committee to let experts come in and explain the internet to them and whether they think SOPA is a good idea.

The rest of the committee (~25 people who actually showed up) were for the bill, most of them contributed nothing to the "debate" aside from voting No to every amendment that tried to clarify or limit the bill. There a group of 4 or 5 that at least tried to "debate", but none of them made an argument beyond "We have to do something, this is something, so lets do this."

Which congressmen made up these two opposing groups? See if you can guess.

Really, what the hell is wrong with people? Money, money, money for the already rich few, at the expense of everyone else, in every part of our lives...

What really chaps my fanny is that these media companies can't be bothered to make their products available in digital format at a kiosk in Walmart, but they are more than happy to sell out dated rotational media that my kids can destroy in 3 seconds. So, I have to buy the rotational media (DVDs), then go home and use my own time, hardware, and electricity to convert it to computer format so they can watch on the computer without destroying the original...

If you can't be bothered to sell your products in a manner that is convenient (or even useful) for the consumer, then you shouldn't be surprised when consumers spend their time and effort making your products suit their needs.

It's the media companies that need to change, not the rest of the bloody world.

Also, the "patent system" should now be referred to as the "innovation stifling system", because it has degraded into nothing more than yet another way for the rich few to stomp on everyone else's faces so that the rich few can be just a bit richer.

Copyrights, patents, and even trademarks are no longer serving their intended purposes, because they have been perverted by a handful of people who just don't care about anyone other than themselves.

SOPA is an anti-humanity bill and it should be defeated.
