To me it looks very sports-coupe-ish. Something that traditionally comes with a long hood and fairly far back seating position.
Seeing as how it's supposed to be the fast tank, I wouldn't be surprised if that was an influence, subconsciously or otherwise.

To give a small sample.

Nothing has ever compelled me to change my opinion so strongly than this statement.

I like this version a lot better than the original.

The front end on the lightning is way too long. It looks awkward and out of place.

This version above is perfect...it'd be brilliant if they trimmed it down to this.

On another note, I'm saddened to still see all that silver armour of the VS troops in front of the lightning picture

Exactly what I was imagining. The only subtle change is to even out the tracks so they're both the same smaller length. Other than that it keeps true to the original compact tank design from Planetside 1.

Reminds me of the Nod Light tank in C&C renegade. Which is a good thing

I think some people may be holding on to nostalgia and just need some time to get use to the new look. Was awkward at first glance from what I expected, but after looking a bit I actually love it. The short version looks like a buggy/clown tank (which shoots water) to me while the long looks like a tank, and looks like it is built to haul ass. Some of the angles make it look longer than it is I think too. The TR shot doesn't look as long. Long front = lots of engine space and tons of traction, looks appropriate and beastly to me.

That looks cool too, but I personally don't mind it being so long. Kinda like it better actually.

The original was a box. Why would anyone want that again?

Yeah thats massively better. Need to see it next to a vanny tho, may need an overall scale reduction too. Having it dam near the same size as an MBT is goofy, and in a game with so much customizing, its pointless since not much actually changes between the tanks to justify a new model as opposed to more options on the MBT for the speed or weapon since you can already go solo in a MBT.

We need another one of those overhead size comparison shots. I think it looks rather big on its own, but I bet next to the heavy tanks and Sunderer it looks more appropriately smaller and closer to the ground.

EDIT: Just came up with a new front-line sport to play: Magrider poll-vault. The trick: sneak up to the magrider and get the Lightning underneath. Point turret straight up as high as it goes, fire rounds. Endless hilarity is bound to ensue.
