But think the mounted position of the take for #3 is better suited for accual combat and over all look.

If I remember correctly, the flamethrower did massive health damage if it so much as touched you. Not to mention you could shoot it in a huge ball and do aoe damage and burn everyone hit.

So no, not really. I've actually tried flailing around with all three HA for shits and giggles, and never killed anyone by doing it.

Pretty much this. Flamethrowers aren't all that effective in comparison to HA. At best they're on even ground, but you can get off your shots way before the flames actually hit your opponent.

At first, due to the Gauss design, I thought that these were combi-weapon upgrades, like an under-barreled, limited fuel flamer attachment (via customization), and I got all excited for the prospect of grenade launcher and shotgun attachments.

2 or 3 seem the most NCish to me. I'm not sure it would be smart to make flamers available to every infantryman though, if the flamethrowers are actually going to be useful this time.

3. Ultimately, what is the difference between the jackhammer and a flamethrower aside from a slight pause between gouts of nasty metal shards?
A few to be sure but both could be interesting CQC weapons.
