Mani, this is a HUGE issue in MMOG. I don't think it is as huge an issure in EQ b/c it is sololy based around PvE (Player vs. Environment) with the exception of a couple of PvP servers. However, DAOC, much like PS is a Realm Vs. Realm game. In some of our more glorious battles you are looking at easily 150+ per side. So around 300 people near eachother. You drop to 1fps Now DOAC addmitdly, by Mythic, does some really dumb shit. But that is also b/c of the graphics engine that they used and its limitations. But with the new engine coming out at the end of the year, there is supposed to be a huge improvement.

Even T2 lag is bad and we are talking 32 people max. I don't think the specs on the servers they will use will be very important. Surfice it to say that they will be the most go aweful powerful computers you have ever seen. I'm sure each world (gaming server) will be made up of multiple servers and stuck on an ungodly internent connection. Hardware is actually relativly cheap. Once the initial cost is shelled out its all pure profit. Look at EQ. After 3 years they have over 400,000 active subscribers and are running at a monthly PROFIT of 2mil +.

It all comes down to the game design. When you are going to be putting 300+ people in area's near eachother....well your engine better handle it properly, b/c the greatest server and greatest client in the world won't make a differance if it doesn't.

But no matter what, lag will still be an issue, lets just hope its a minimal one.

Thanks Rayz... I was wondering about how it was currently in DAoC's environment as well as EQ. The biggest thing is we are going to be dealing with flying vehicles, and other contraptions, so this could become a nagging problem.

I am hoping that the technology to handle these numbers has been developed. You kind of want to hope that if the dev teams are designing this new game and are hoping for massive participation, that they would take that into consideration when planning the host server equipment, etc.

I guess the proof will be in the pudding!

Soundblaster Audigy .. Hands down.

My Audigy causes me some headaches, but it's not so much the sound card as it is the speaker system I got with it. To get Surround Sound to work, I have to set it to the 5.1 Speaker settings, and I only have the 4.1 speakers.

The 4.1's have no center channel so anytime something trys to play through the center channel I don't hear it. Most times I have been able to fix it by messing with in game settings, but others times I can't.

My recomondation would be to get the Auidgy, but don't get any speakers other then the 5.1 surround sound system with it.
