Whoever said that gay people are attention whores and that coming out is an exercise in attention whoring, I ask you to perform the following mental task:

For a moment, close your eyes. Imagine that instead of going along with the social norm and being attracted to women (if you're a man), you fancy men instead. Imagine your family's fantasies about your wedding to a beautiful woman, what your children will look like, and the joy your parents will feel at having grandchildren to play with. They could tell their neighbors all about the wedding and how your life is. Now imagine walking up to your parents and shattering that dream for them by telling them that you are gay.

You're not telling them because you just loooove the negative attention, you're telling them for their own sake - so that they don't keep living with the false idea that their child is a heterosexual.

Imagine yourself in that position, then come back and say that gay people are attention whores.

From what I've learned from my gay friends who've come out to their parents, they've said that their parents told them that they already suspected it. They weren't pissed off, but shocked. One of my friend's mom's refuses to talk about it, always changing the subject. But they didn't disown them or anything.

Eh good luck with that.I knew a kid who was gay and told his parents.Yeah well hopefully it goes better for you.The kid got kicked out of his house permentaly at age of 15.Hes 17 now living with a Aunt.Still dont think hes talked to his parents for at least a year.

That's retarded, what do the parents think they're accomplishing? All they're doing is missing out on their kid's life.

I say the kid is better off. So he doesn't have a relationship with his parents - which means he doesn't have to deal with their resentful crap. Good riddance.

Oh, PS, people don't "turn" gay. That's like saying "I was born Caucasian, but one day I turned Chinese."

People realise it at different times.

A guy called Steve who used to be my best friend tried to convince himself that he was straight - dated a girl for a few years. But everyone said that they realised it at different times. Steve said he realised it when he was little and his brother said, "Elton John is GAY" and then he realised it had a name.

In any case... thanks guys... PSU, I knew, was a great community... but now your really showing your true colors...

And as to whoever said "coming out" is like being an 'attention whore' I have to tell you that your an ass... Why anybody would want the kind of attention I get is beyond me, but then I guess there are sadists out there. And theres always that one person in a great group of people that has to say something assholeish...
