But I'm also not quite a faceless drone in an Embassy hive.

This was me a few months ago. Transport for a classified organization in Baghdad Iraq, Civilian attire, beards (Well my attempt at a white trash goatee at least) and H&K M416 instead of the standard M4, Sig Sauer P228 instead of the M9. Up armored SUV's, Sedans, and trucks. Twas good times indeed.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us Now I'm back in the states.....doing pretty much the same thing, for a Security company here in Boise. Without Iraqi's, Armor, or weapons though....just transporting Mental patients between hospitals, running routes to check out businesses we have contracts with to make sure they aren't broken into, and standing guard at some of them. |

You aren't part of the cool (Iraqi) kids club until you can shave with sewing thread.

The point of it was that when we pass by, if there's an IED waiting with a trigger man, they see us and don't know who we are, don't know if we're army or not, and hesitate, and we get out of the danger area before he can hit us. They've been doing this style of operation for almost the entire war, and no one has been hit in about 6 years.
So you can laugh at the facial hair, but hey, im sure it saved my ass at least once, and many others. And they do know who the real mercs are, and what they drive. |

But, who would you blend in with? All the white-skinned blonde Iraqis? That is what made me wonder. There was nothing about the guys I saw that made me think "Wow, they sure had me fooled. I had no idea they were close-protection guys." Or: Someone call security! There's a whole gang of 6' tall, muscled-up white Iraqis in excruciatingly new t-shirts and jeans walking around the base!
How would they look at the average white guy and think "Oh, he blends in, must be from Iraq? But, I don't know much about where you were operating. Were there a lot of people that looked like you that you blended in with there? Because not one of you guys ever looked like an Iraqi, or even from someone other than smack-dab in the middle of America to me. You couldn't have looked much more foreign if you were walking around in groups of three with drum, fife, and Old Glory. I am not saying this to be contentious, despite the humor. I am actually curious how an Elmer's-Glue-All-white American with or without facial hair blended in. And I am not disputing your safety record. If you were trying not to look like regular Army guys, well, you didn't, but, to me, at least, you all looked like Special Forces, which, again, to me, would have made you look like a walking bull's-eye. But, I don't know what the average Hadji was looking for, either, other than the shiny-smooth chin and ARMY shirt and attitude.
