its worth stating, if things were to go amazingly well, they could get in sooner, thats just the period of time they feel safe stating on record.

Q: How does SOE feel about SWGEmu?
A: well officially I have to say it's bad. but that's officially.

Q: how do you feel about the swgemu project?
A: I answered this somewhere but overall I can't endorse it but I have no comment. It's technically not cool.
What the fuck.

I would however cry if they used SWG's class system in some other project, maybe EQ Next or something. MMO's need a class system these days that moves away from the old stuff, and SWG's system was the right way to do it.

Yeah that's true. SWG is dead most of the Star Wars community is playing TORtanic despite its shortcomings. Rolling it back to Pre CU wouldn't bring people back.

But a new MMO that used the sandbox design of SWG would do well I think. Just make sure there is also some good ingame content. That was SWG weakness. Sandbox elements way ahead of its time but lacking hardly any decent developer produced content. Then by the time added some they had already gutted what made the game good in those updates.

It means that and a few other things, if you read between lines.

That's the most I could get from it, but I've always hated to make assumptions. What dark secrets were you picking up?

Oh, that's not a secret. Everyone knows they were having fun squeezing SOE's balls. If anyone's going to bring up legal problems about a SWG emu, it won't be SOE.

theres an agreement in place under the table with SOE/LA with SWGEmu devs that says basically, 'if you don't make money from it, we don't care and we won't do anything. Also dont trash talk us'. If you understand the SWGEmu history with LA/SOE, the WTF comment makes more sense.

They are both written in unix. It wouldnt seem to be that big of a issue to this layman.
There's no such thing as "written in unix". Unix is an operating system made by Bell Labs in the late 1960s. It's a bunch of programs that were written in the C and Assembler languages. The one program that runs everything is called the kernel. When the kernel is combined with a specific set of programs inside a file system that is organized to a particular standard, it becomes Unix or "unix-like".

Mac OS is based on BSD, which is Berkley University Science Department's Unix-like open source operating system. Linux is its own open source Unix-like operating system based on code that is not based on BSD. MacOS is not open source, but FreeBSD is. As a result, they are very different in capabilities, especially OpenGL (the 3D rendering abilities). While FreeBSD and Linux have binary compatibility packages that allow FreeBSD programs to work in Linux (and vice versa), that does not mean MacOS programs will work in either FreeBSD or Linux.

Why is that?

The simple answer is that Apple does not share the libraries of source code that many of their programs use, so it's not really possible to make binary compatibility packages for them for FreeBSD or Linux. I am sure Apple does this because those programs (like it's user interface) would work fine in FreeBSD and Linux, which would kinda sorta drop the retail value of their products, ya know.

That said, OpenGL for Linux and FreeBSD is solid. The worst part is poor drivers from both AMD and Nvidia. Current Nvidia drivers refuse verticle sync in Linux 64bit, even just browsing the internet, but they work great in Windows 7and MacOS, for instance.

As far as having PS2 in MacOS and not in FreeBSD or Linux, it boils down to proprietary drivers and MacOS's better use of OpenGL.

Re: Smedley Answer from reddit

I love the fact that Smed talks a lot about adding more sandbox gameplay to PS2. This makes me very happy.

However there are also at least a few e-sports fans on the development team. And at the core, Planetside is a competitive game (although not in an "arena" sense).

I wonder how the two styles will be able to intermingle, if at all. I hope it doesn't turn out that we get diluted versions of both types of gameplay. These are important decisions that will shape the future success of the game (like Core Combat did to Planetside 1).

I still don't see the "WTF part". The agreement IS under the table. Smed's still required to officially not approve, so he doesn't look he's greenlighting future emuMMOs. But he's being honest enough to at least hint that there's some secret approval for SWGemu.
