Thinking this over a bit more, I don't think they can afford to let content slip in order to optimise the game. They need to do both.

I think 1 month is the sweet spot, any longer and they lose people due to lack of new content.
Thats the fine line they will tread and just tell you "soon".
While that, imo, will please many there will be just as many who were not having performance issues but are growing tired of the same old stuff day in and day out.

Every time they add something someone else has optimisation issues.
I cant see how this is going to be a quick problem to solve.

Its taken six months to sort out server transfer tokens (still not done), how long it will take to fix optimisation is anyones guess.

Poor MLG as well

And this gives us a rough idea on how long it might all take from an earlier post.

Hey also saw this interesting article on Mashable.

And hey look at this, PS2 to be available at launch!

Not implying that any of this is related of course.
Its just a coincidence that Nov 15 is somewhere in the middle of 2-4 months

2-4 months?!!

Sorry I can't wait that long for new content. If the released Hossin, that time frame would be fine for me.

Those of us from Planetside waited 9 years for Planetside2. There will be plenty of people around 2-3 months from now.
Besides they have to come up with 2 more battle islands and a lot more work needs to be done to get MLG ready.

I don't think it is going to take the 3 months until PS4 launch. Like I said in earlier post there will be a good bit of hype prior to then and they cannot afford press on poor performance any longer than possible now. That's probably why the sudden focus only on optimization. They held out long as they could and decided it was going to take a major and decisive move. Time will tell I guess.

Its not like I'm out the door or threatening to leave or anything that drastic. I love PS2, I just don't know if I can do 4 more months of fighting over Indar etc. and the alerts are getting old.

Plus I thinks it makes it harder wait when I look at the roadmap. I was looking forward to ESF update, Gal update and so on. Putting *everything* on the back burner for that long seems drastic.

Well this raises an interesting point...

The things currently on test are:

The remainder of the ESF update, striker fixes, projectile fixes, etc. etc.

These are 3 things people have wanted for some time, and they don't look like they are in an incomplete state. The question from me, is whether or not these things will be pushed in GU15, since at this point the Striker fix is as wanted as anything else by 2/3 factions

Well performance is fine for me but if the devs think this is necessary as they obviously do then I support the decision and I guess I'll get some benefit from this too.

This is a smart move, optimisation should always take priority, personally I don't care what gets pushed back if I get more performance.

A clear PS4 launch window issue. Guessing getting the game to run on 8 cores were harder than first thought. The wording of it does make it sound better.

I however think it's already too late. No matter how well they pull this off we're not getting double the fps we have now. Anything less than double the performance and it's not worth pulling dev time off new features for what will now probably be 3-6 months.

The window is closed anyway. The friends I've gotten to test the game aren't going to download PS2 again no matter what I tell them.

This is why optimization of games is usually done before release of the game. Instead of it being in beta, where the players see these type of situations as acceptable, we're now doing it live and putting the game on hold essentially.

Should just do what FFXIV is doing and call it Planetside2 - A Realm Reborn. There's enough things that need fix that apparently take an exorbitant amount of time that they really should of just left this game in beta for at least another year. Lack of content, lack of persistent goals, and finally they're tackling the lack of performance from their own client.

Did you learn nothing from Vanguard Smedley ?

Fixing the performance has to be done, too many friends of mine have tried the game and quit simply because of the performance of the game. The problem is that was 8 months ago, why is it suddenly an issue you're willing to fix but thought was acceptable back then?

Re: Development shifting focus to Optimization

This is a smart move!! I most welcome this. Over the past few updates mostly before GU14 my performance has had little to no change but still get bad frame rates. GU14 came out and I noticed a big dip in frames.

I'm always up for new stuff but it's not good when it effects performance and makes it nearly unplayable to most of the community. I also think that if it works fine for those now then it should work even better after optimizations.

Why are they now announcing this on the same day they released the data for PS4?
