Shogun: Total War - Find the original version, no Warlord edition, no xpack with difficulty nerf. Campaign mode on highest difficulty. Best RTS.

Mount & Blade - early alpha versions, bare bones, free roaming, with excellent horse archery mechanics populated with scary mobs like the uberaccurate Khergits and the terrifying Dark Knights

Mount and Blade is the shiznit. Haven't played it in a while, though. I got pretty powerful. fucking khergits and their ridiculous accuracy.
