I wonder if one of the settings allows you to put it on the ground, and it will vacuum the base for you.

SOE has done self referential things from the start. How many people ran through the city of Qeynos in Everquest? Qeynos = Sony EQ.

I suppose all the buttons on it are cute, but I think it's just a little obnoxious. Why would an ACE have a power button?

And maybe a tad bit of speculation here....4 symbols, are we lead to believe there will 4 different types of CE? Or possibly 8 since there's 4 on each side?

Haha! That would be funny, sneaking into a courtyard only to see dozens of these things hovering around cleaning the base. Would be like a Super-Mario level trying to sneak in between them!

it makes sense because people are left and right handed last time i checked (as a lefty myself the thought is appreciated even if its not directly helpful for me in any way !).. Two rows of buttons makes its easy to deploy one handed. As for the PS buttons I think its pretty cool, don't take it so seriously everyone !

For a device like this (which can probably deploy many different things based on your CE level) it makes sense to have each button renderable to show different pictures. So its possible they are just place holders, if not.. who cares

Agreed, people getting so annoyed about a harmless bit of fun/marketing.

You're gonna be pissed when you go into the base and find the spawn tubes are all powered by Playstation 3's via the USB port.

Yeah, that makes sense. Since mobile phones have two sets of numbers, one set reversed for left handed users. Also military GPS's have two sets of identical buttons on either side for left handed users. I find it quite annoying that my keyboard has and exact mirror copy of all the keys off to the left, its a waste of space. Have you ever tried to use a TV remote which only has one set of buttons while left handed? It just can't be done.

If the average left handed Joe can use the exact same asymmetrical PlayStation controllers as the average right handed Joe with the same proficiency, then I think a militarily trained engineer can use such a tool one handed (either one) without having space and resources wasted in the tool's design, which even after a second of consideration is totally useless.

I take the point, but I also think there's a PhD for the taking here for a lucky statistics student.

The hypothesis would be "left handed console game players have a lower K/D than right handed players". The student would measure the K/D of loads of players and then allow for various factors such as:

How old was the player?
How much had they had to drink?
What were they smoking?

to try and determine if there really is a disadvantage to being a lefty and using a right-handed controller.

(and if there is, it would explain my 0.5 K/D on most online FPS lol )

No. All the things you quoted are completely irrelevant because they have a linear layout and are rectangular objects, so from either side (left or right) there is no difference besides the angle your coming at them or which hand is doing what. This is a circle, the buttons are places circularly where the fingers will (almost) naturally lie; if a bit spaced out, it also has a definite UP side. So you cant flip it around between left and right hand, to do so would seem awkward.

The design makes it obvious that its for quick one handed deployment which could be the difference between life or death in the battlefield. I wouldn't be surprised if to lay these you don't explicitly need to change your weapon like you do in PS1 but instead you have a second function key to drop them.

The grips on the inside of the circles. The buttons sitting right by the fingers.. All makes sense if you actually think about it.

Yeah, because a few millisecond delay from having to stretch your fingers a couple of inches to the right when placing a mine is going to be the difference between life and death. If your death is that immanent then there wouldn't even be enough time to escape from the blast radius. The time saved by there being two sets of buttons is practically inconsequential.

It could just as easily have been designed with all 5 required buttons in the centre, beginning to arch up. Power on one side X on the other, then O above that, then square next to it, then triangle above that. Simples.

Besides which they are made of nanite, so they do not require mass production and as such can be made specifically for the person ordering it, which is the case for player chosen sidegrades. Which do you think uses up more precious resources (and I should remind you, nanite is practically the most precious), using a design which unnecessarily caters for two types of people and uses up far more nanite (plus design space and weight) than what is needed, or simply having another program in the design computer which is an exact copy of a right handed version of the ACE, only mirrored?

However I would rather rely on an official explanation of its design than random apologetics, but I'm not expecting one because it is not truly necessary. However I'm always willing to go after flawed apologetics
